It looks like there has been more news around Veridian, Microsoft’s codename for their next Virtual Server release. During an official webcast, Jeff Woosley (Lead Program Manager for Windows Virtualization) unveiled what’s coming next in vNext.
- Windows Server 2003 Volume Shadow Service (VSS) support – Will automate operations of saving state, shutting down the virtual machine and then restoring the saved state. It will not, as hoped, provide virtual machines with a live backup strategy.
- Intel Virtualization Technology and AMD I/O Virtualization Technology CPU support – Should improve the performance of non-Microsoft guest operating systems.
- 64bit guest operating systems will not be supported in this release. Support is expected with the Windows Hypervisor.
- A public beta program will begin sometime in the first half of 2006.
