VMware Releases Virtual Infrastructure Beta 2
Steve Herrod's blog announced the release of VMware's Virtual Infrastructure Beta 2.  He posts that he will continue to update us all with more details, but for now posts the higher level drivers of this release.

VMware ESX Server 3.0 Guest OS:

  • 4 way Virtual SMP support
  • Support for up to 16GB of RAM per VM
  • Improved performance
  • Experimental 64bit guest support
  • Experimental support for Solaris 10 (x86) guests
  • VMware Hardware Support:

  • Increased hardware compatibility list
  • Supporting iSCSI
  • Supporting NAS (NFS) storage
  • Added Virtualization services:

  • Added Distributed Availability Services (DAS) for high availability
  • Added Distributed Resource Scheduling (DRS) improving management and load balancing
  • Added VMware Consolidated Backup to simplify virtual machine backups
  • Added more Manageability:

  • VirtualCenter 2.0 offers tighter control over ESX Server instances
  • VirtualCenter 2.0 centralizes license management
  • VirtualCenter 2.0 offers fine grained access controls and audit trails
