Altiris has said that AppStream has joined the Altiris Developer Program. AppStream has optimised its technology to be compatible with Altiris Software Virtualisation Solution technology; the combination of which the companies expect will deliver virtualised, on-demand application delivery and management.
IT organisations can now use AppStream 5.1 to provide instant delivery and activation of applications virtualised by Altiris SVS software. SVS software eliminates conflicts between applications and does not alter the Windows installation, while AppStream technology provides streaming to deliver on-demand applications to the desktop, the company said.
According to the company, the combination of SVS with AppStream technology offers IT organisations:
- Increased control of software environments
- Efficient service with true on-demand application delivery and software repair
- Flexibility to quickly move users and applications between computers
- Reduced software license costs
- Reduced testing and help desk costs through conflict-free software operations
Streaming is becoming an integral component of the application virtualisation market segment, which is predicted to grow significantly over the next 12 - 24 months, according to Andi Mann, Enterprise Management Associates senior analyst. Mann said, "Streaming is an instantaneous delivery mechanism that complements software virtualisation. Streaming combined with the ability to virtualise applications is a powerful combination for software management and control."
Other benefits of software virtualisation and streaming include rapid application migration and the ability to lockdown desktops while maintaining end-user productivity.
"Software streaming and virtualisation are complementary technologies that serve two very different but additive functions to improve software management and the enterprise computing experience," said Steve Morton, Altiris VP of product management and marketing.
