Storage Management: The Key To Controlling The Data Explosion

The exponential growth of data is creating storage management opportunities for VARs — especially in virtualization.

Data storage continues to grow at a rapid pace. According to a recent InfoPro survey, the average installed storage capacity at Fortune 1000 corporations has grown from 198 TB to 680 TB in less than two years. That equates to a growth rate of 243%, as capacity continues to double every 10 months. Although storage product prices continue to decline, data growth rates are outpacing any savings an organization might realize. This trend provides VARs with the opportunity to upgrade their customers’ storage software infrastructures to enable them to manage heterogeneous storage and provide advanced storage services (e.g. replication, data movement, storage migrations) while increasing the amount of storage each administrator can manage.

Recovery management, interoperability, disaster recovery, and the never-ending quest to shrink backup windows are big storage management challenges. Although it may not sound as high-tech as other topics like ILM (information lifecycle management), minimizing the amount of time it takes to back up data is still one of the biggest challenges customers encounter today. Many vendors have begun to refer to the backup and recovery process as recovery management — looking at the data from its creation to its final destruction to understand what data needs to be protected and recoverable. File server and storage consolidation are other major storage management problems. IT employees are eager to reclaim data center space and gain management efficiencies by reducing the number of physical servers and replacing them with virtual servers. Customers are leveraging virtual machine software technologies from companies like VMware, Microsoft, and XenSource to accomplish these goals. This new virtual infrastructure has created new management challenges and requires high-performance storage management solutions — a clear opportunity for VARs.
