Sun Microsystems on Tuesday gave its Sun Fire servers a boost, offering models powered by UltraSparc IV+ processors with clock speeds of 1.95GHz or 2.1GHz.

The new servers run the Sun Solaris operating system, which together with Sparc is "the engine that drives our server business," John Fowler, executive vice president of Sun's Systems Group, said in a statement.

The faster processors are available in Sun Fire V490, V890, E2900, E4900, E6900, E20K and E25K servers. The latest UltraSparc chips have up to twice the performance of the UltraSparc 1V model, and five times the performance of the UltraSparc III, Sun said.

The Sun Fire/UltraSparc platforms are designed for running customer relationship management, business intelligence/data warehousing, and enterprise applications using large databases.

The systems are built for virtualisation environments using a combination of fault isolated hard partitions, and Solaris Containers, which is technology capable of consolidating and running in virtualisation mode hundreds of applications on a single system, according to Sun.

After years of financial struggles following the dot-com bust, Sun appears to be making progress in the server market. The company last year posted its first jump in market share based on sales in five years, according to Gartner. The company increased its share to 10.8 percent from 9.6 percent in 2005.

Revenues in 2006 rose 15.4 percent to US$5.7 billion. For the overall server market, revenue increased 2 percent for the year to US$52.7 billion.
