PG&E and Fujitsu America, Inc. Celebrate Clean Energy With a New Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Fujitsu America, Inc. today are celebrating the installation of a fuel cell electric generator that will help offset 50 percent of the power needed to cool the Fujitsu Sunnyvale campus data center and labs. The fuel cell will generate 200 kilowatts (kW) of clean energy while surplus heat from the fuel cell will be captured to provide hot water for the facility.
Since 2000 PG&E has partnered with Fujitsu America in the implementation of various energy efficiency, energy conservation, demand response and self generation programs. These programs help PG&E maintain the balance of energy supply and demand in the state, and help keep our customers like Fujitsu America competitive at the same time.

As a result of these energy saving programs, Fujitsu America has saved over 3,300,000 kilowatt hours of electricity and 4,000 therms of natural gas annually, while reducing their overall electric demand for their Sunnyvale campus by 350 kW.  Fujitsu America’s efforts have effectively prevented approximately 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere each year.

"PG&E is proud to support Fujitsu America’s management and staff with their comprehensive and integrated approach to reducing energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions,” said David Rubin, director of service analysis for Pacific Gas and Electric Company. "PG&E recognizes Fujitsu America as a leader in the responsible use of energy.”

PG&E helps finance clean on-site energy projects through its Self-Generation Incentive Program and through the California Solar Initiative. These programs offer cash incentives to help offset the upfront costs associated with clean, distributed generation systems. Fujitsu America earned a $500,000 incentive from PG&E for this fuel cell project. To date, PG&E has provided over $200 million in incentives to its customers through these programs.

PG&E is a leader when it comes to helping customers reduce their demand for energy. Over the past 30 years, PG&E’s energy efficiency and demand response programs have prevented more than 125 million tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, while saving our customers nearly $10 billion.
