Diskeeper Corporation today announced a new breakthrough from its R&D lab, maximizing virtualization performance with zero-overhead. The innovators in performance and reliability technologies will operate their proprietary InvisiTasking technology on popular virtualization platforms. This will allow software solutions based on this technology, such as Diskeeper performance software, to greatly increase I/O performance and overall reliability throughout the virtual enterprise.
InvisiTasking is the processing technology behind the real-time operations found in Diskeeper software. It is this technology that sets Diskeeper apart from all other utilities as InvisiTasking prevents background processes from ever interfering with application and operating system use of computer resources. Instead of letting the operating system scheduler allocate the entire computer system to each process, InvisiTasking empowers the system to allocate its various resources (CPU, disk and network) separately to the process that needs each one. This allows overlapping use of separate resources -- not just reducing system overhead, but eliminating it altogether. This means zero resource conflict -- period.
"InvisiTasking has been a groundbreaking life saver for thousands of IT professionals," said Mr. Gary Quan, Chief Technology Officer at Diskeeper Corporation. "As corporations move to virtual desktops and servers, they are being challenged with the added I/O overhead that multiple systems impose on shared disk subsystems. Our customers use Diskeeper on virtual machines to eliminate unnecessary I/O, thereby freeing up their hardware to focus on their business needs. We are excited to provide this zero-overhead technology to improve the performance on their virtual machines."
Virtualization has great potential by promising dramatic improvement in the efficiency and availability of resources and applications and by saving an organization money, time and space. However all systems suffer from file fragmentation(1), including virtual ones. At the virtual level fragmentation is compounded. This crippling fragmentation can slow system performance to a crawl.
Defragmentation has long since been known to play a major role in aiding the transition to virtual systems as file fragmentation causes the operating system to pass extra and unnecessary I/O traffic to the storage sub-system. As virtual machines (VM) share a common hardware platform, excessive and unnecessary use of hardware/storage resources by one VM slows not only the requesting VM, but all other VMs on that platform. Defragmentation of hypervisor and guest operating systems ensures optimized I/O traffic is generated by every VM increasing performance for the entire virtual infrastructure.
Currently certified for Windows Server® 2008 Hyper-V™ and a VMware® Technology Alliance Partner, Diskeeper has been fully compatible with virtual machines for years, offering the leading low-memory usage optimization technology and solving system-slowing-fragmentation automatically. This recent advancement will provide fully automatic I/O optimization for users of the software solutions on hypervisor-based virtualization solutions.
