How-To: Running VMware ESX 3.5 or ESXi in a VMware Server 2.0 VM

Remember the video series we talked about a while back that described how to install VMware ESX Server inside a virtual machine running on VMware Workstation 6?  Well now you can get away with a completely free solution, installing VMware ESXi on VMware Server.

The guys from Xtravirt who originally documented the secrets of doing this on Workstation are back again, this time creating a useful and helpful document that details the steps needed to install and run VMware ESX 3.5 and ESXi virtualization platforms within a VMware Server 2.0 virtual machine.

There are some requirements:

  • A Windows XP or Vista PC with Intel-VT or AMD-V enabled in the BIOS
  • A Multicore processor
  • At least 1 GB of unused memory
  • Administrative rights
  • And you need the VMware Server software and either VMware ESX 3.5 or ESXi

Download the document and follow along.  You'll need to make a few configuration changes in the virtual machine's config file, as well as a few changes to the virtual BIOS.

Go download the step-by-step document today!
