Today at VMworld
2010 Europe, Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client
computing, reported more organizations embracing desktop virtualization
with innovative, ambitious projects based on the latest Wyse cloud
client computing solutions. Wyse is currently appearing at VMworld 2010
Europe in the Solutions Exchange, booth no. 29.
Cloud client computing combines the key elements of thin and zero client
computing, desktop virtualization, and unified communications, to form a
powerful IT solution for business, government and institutions to reduce
costs, improve security, compliance, mobility and productivity.
“Major reviews of desktop infrastructure are triggering a wave of new
European virtual desktop implementations in which our cloud client
computing solutions play a central role alongside the leaders in
virtualization software," said Mark Jordan, Vice President, EMEA at
Wyse. "The wide variety of organizations, small and large, adopting
Wyse–based virtual desktops are united by how the technology provides a
much more agile, high performance infrastructure that delivers
unparalleled security, energy savings and lower TCO.”
"The combination of Wyse and VMware
View provides formidable and innovative solutions for today's
modern end-user computing environment," said Vittorio Viarengo, vice
president, End User Computing Products, VMware. "VMware and Wyse
continue to team up to provide a personalized end user experience across
a diverse set of devices without sacrificing security,
enabling customers to cost effectively move to an IT as a service model."
At New Durham College, UK, students are starting the new academic
year with a transformed desktop experience with Wyse zero clients
installed across the campus. The decision to implement a virtual desktop
solution was driven by how Wyse zero clients required no maintenance and
would help the college save on power, while delivering an equivalent, if
not better, end user experience even when using the most intensive
multi-media applications and data. This is the first phase of a program
to migrate the whole college onto a completely virtualized
infrastructure.
George Wraith, head of systems, New Durham College said: “We required
our desktop infrastructure to deliver an increased quality of experience
for all our users. Migrating to virtual desktops with Wyse zero clients
will help us realize this goal and make greener, more cost efficient
computing integral to how the college provides a first class education.”
SETAO, the public transportation operator in the French City of
Orleans, has migrated to virtual desktops with Wyse and VMware
solutions. The organization’s 10-strong team manages an IT
infrastructure of 300 desktops and over 80 physical and virtual servers
distributed across five sites.
"We were long-time PC users, but we decided to change over to virtual
desktops built upon VMware architecture and Wyse thin clients. The user
experience is identical to a PC environment, but administration and
support have clearly been simplified," explains Olivier Parcollet,
assistant to SETAO's Chief Information Officer. "In case of a hardware
fault, a new workstation can be installed by sending a new device
through the internal mail system. In a few seconds, the user can plug
the unit in and is instantly ready to go without needing to change any
settings. IT technicians have seen their job change from managing
computing facilities for whole departments to simply maintaining master
images or desktop groups."
Groupe Agrica manages state-mandated social security schemes
(retirement, injury, healthcare and savings plans) for employees in the
agricultural sector. The company has a total of 200 Wyse thin clients
supporting its business nationwide.
Julien Mousqueton, CTO, Groupe Agrica said: “We’ve replaced our PCs with
Wyse V10L thin clients, with priority for roll–out being for our smaller
remote sites, where problems in terms of user experience were the most
evident. We selected these models as their Wyse ThinOS operating system
is very simple to manage and to deploy, particularly in terms of its
configuration. Our teams did not even require any specific training. All
that was necessary was to follow the instructions outlined in the
documentation provided with the equipment and we had no particular
problems.”
“Moreover, it is no longer necessary to call out a technician to repair
a desktop, since we have implemented a spare Wyse thin client for each
remote site. In the event of a breakdown, it is a simple job to replace
the defective desktop with the spare Wyse thin client which will then
become immediately operational, whereas in the past it was necessary to
wait for several hours, or even days,” continued Julien Mousqueton.
In Germany, travel agency DER Deutsches Reisebüro GmbH & Co. OHG
is implementing a solution comprising 2300 Wyse zero clients. The Wyse
P20 zero clients are optimized for the PCoIP protocol and will be
deployed in tourist offices.
Caja Canarias is the number one financial services provider in
the Canary Islands. In line with their innovative approach Caja Canarias
has implemented a VDI project that provides high availability to users
and desktops while also enabling a reduction in maintenance costs and
increasing security at the highest level possible.
Carlos Jara, IT production manager at Caja Canarias found the Wyse P20
the best option to successfully meet those objectives, "Wyse P20 is a
great product that's plug & play, ready to work and what's most
important: there's no compromise on the user experience. Having users
feel comfortable with the VDI solution was a challenge and this device
means there is no difference for them to work with the same applications
with seamless response."
