VMblog's Expert Interviews: HyperGrid Talks Software-Defined Cloud Vision for the HyperCloud

Today, HyperGrid made a major announcement around its Software-Defined Cloud (SDC) strategy for the company's HyperCloud software platform -- a platform that integrates application management, intelligent cloud management and software-defined infrastructure services for both private and public clouds.  To learn more and gain a better understanding of this update, I reached out to the expert, Manoj Nair, Chief Product Officer at HyperGrid.

VMblog:  Can you talk about what HyperGrid is announcing today?

Manoj Nair:  We are announcing our Software-Defined Cloud vision for the HyperCloudTM software platform that empowers customers on their journey to a cloud model. It makes it possible for customers to embrace a multi-cloud architecture for their applications and workloads while meeting their business needs.

We are also introducing our latest version of HyperCloud that enables Enterprises and MSPs to intelligently manage all their workloads and applications on any public or private cloud. It integrates application management, cloud management and software-defined infrastructure into a single software platform. There are a number of significant new capabilities including:

  • Intelligent workload placement: Automated selection of the best cloud for deploying a given multi-tier workload (VMs or containers) based on its cost, performance and compliance needs.
  • HyperCloud Analytics: SaaS-based cost management solution to help customers analyze their public cloud spend and receive recommendations for cost reduction.
  • Multi-tier workload modeling: Leveraging a large repository of blueprints for various OS and applications. for agile app development and automation

VMblog:  What does this mean for enterprises?

Nair:  Many enterprises leverage clouds and have ended up with app deployments in multiple clouds, but in a haphazard manner without a way to consistently manage, govern and secure their workloads across these environments. With HyperCloud they can assess their current state in the cloud journey, cloudify their existing assets, and set themselves firmly on the path to execute the rest of the strategy. They can then achieve a consistent model for intelligent management, governance and automation of their workloads across all their clouds.

HyperCloud delivers agility and significant cost savings with a turnkey solution to model workloads and automatically optimize their placement for cost, performance and compliance on all their clouds.

VMblog:  And what does this mean for MSPs?

Nair:  MSPs are able to elevate their relationship with their customer-base and become a trusted advisor. With intelligent workload placement, they can leverage HyperGrid analytics to determine the best destination for a workload based on performance and price.

They can grow their business with the HyperCloud platform with new services including cloudifying customers' on-premises IT, multi-cloud support, and containerization.

They can address IT's needs to transform today's MSP business model to one that reflects the multi-cloud world they now live in by becoming a service broker. Many organizations want to leverage cloud but don't have the skills. MSPs have been leveraging cloud and the cloud model for years and can help guide customers to the right decisions for their business.

VMblog:  Can you talk more about the cloud journey that you mentioned?

Nair:  HyperCloud provides a Software-Defined approach to adopting a cloud model. At HyperGrid, we don't believe cloud is a place for workloads and data, but rather a model with key capabilities and experiences across private and public clouds.

Based on our work with customers, we see 5 main stages that enterprises go through to achieve the full digital transformation benefits of the cloud. HyperGrid's platform offering, HyperCloud, has been enhanced over the past two years with capabilities that map directly to this journey.

  • Cloudify Existing Infrastructure: HyperGrid's HyperCloud platform "cloudifies" the infrastructure and presents services to IT, developers, and end-users, so that it can be utilized more efficiently. Resources are presented as services, simplifying consumption. HyperCloud presents a single view of all assets, either on premises or in the cloud, making it easy to find resources to meet their needs.
  • Automate IT Operations: HyperCloud software-defined infrastructure provides a fully integrated services stack with compute, networking and storage available on-demand, within the datacenter with up to 50% savings compared to the public cloud.
  • Transform existing Apps: HyperCloud enables applications transformation as legacy applications can be containerized and then migrated to private or public cloud. This transformation improves the performance of the applications while reducing IT costs with cost-effective infrastructure.
  • Manage Apps across Cloud: HyperCloud supports the broadest ecosystem of application environment (VMs, containers and bare metal), virtualization platforms, and clouds including VMware, Hyper-V, OpenStack, KVM, Azure, AWS, GCP and several others. Organizations can now effectively manage applications across public and private clouds using more than 400 templates from HyperCloud app store
  • Intelligent Workload Placement: HyperCloud provides real-time analytics across public clouds and the in-house infrastructure to determine what is the best environment to run an application based on the cost-performance profile that the business requires.

VMblog:  Can you explain to readers what you mean by Software-Defined Cloud (SDC)?

Nair:  A software-defined cloud takes the 5 steps of the journey and gives you control of all the elements of the journey across any cloud - private, MSP, public. It delivers an integrated approach to app management, cloud management and software defined infrastructure, greatly reducing integration effort and management costs. With a software-defined cloud, IT can provide consistency across all cloud deployments and deliver the services that the business needs simply, on-demand, and decoupled from the underlying cloud fabric so that the cloud model is truly open and vendor agnostic.

VMblog:  What are some of the key differentiations / features and benefits of the HyperGrid SDC solution?

Nair:  A key differentiator of HyperGrid's Software-Defined cloud is the integration. It delivers a completely integrated approach across application management, cloud management and software-defined infrastructure. To achieve this without HyperCloud, several tools have to be integrated to provide a seamless view from the application, to the cloud, to the infrastructure and would require constant maintenance. With HyperCloud, this is available out of the box with minimal management and maintenance.

HyperCloud operates across several public and private clouds, and delivers a consistent management platform. Other tools deliver support for a portion of the clouds and hypervisors that HyperCloud supports, with some of the capabilities. HyperCloud is a simple, single platform that delivers the 3 "A's" of cloud:

  • Agility: Empowers IT to respond quickly to changing business and technical requirements and to leverage new technologies seamlessly to support innovation.
  • Automation: Through automation, IT is able to support their growing environment. End-users meet their own needs through self-service, lightening up the burden on IT and IT can ensure internal and external policies are supported effectively with automated support.
  • Application Transformation: Legacy applications need to be updated and brought into the cloud model to improve utilization of assets. With HyperCloud, applications can be transformed to a cloud model for utilization across several public clouds.

The Enterprise App Store has over 400 application templates that accelerates application development while supporting IT governance policies. Applications are developed and deployed consistently across public and private clouds, simplifying the relationship between IT and DevOps.

One of the key capabilities that customers are very excited about is the Intelligent Workload Placement. HyperGrid analyzes a workload based on its compliance and performance profile and then provide the cost to run that workload across several clouds. IT can then one-click deploy the application to the best cloud.

There is a SaaS version as well helps customers analyze their cloud spend and receive recommendations to reduce their costs. These advanced capabilities are powered by HyperCloud Analytics, which maintains real-time insights into tens of millions of combinations of instances in the various clouds. Customers can sign-up for a free trial at and upgrade to a fully functional version after the free trial.
