In an increasingly connected world where cybersecurity threats and digital transformation pose major challenges for organizations, Swissbit is positioning itself as a trusted partner for reliable data storage, data protection, and secure access solutions. At a recent briefing during the 58th IT Press Tour in Boston, Swissbit executives provided an overview of the company’s history, capabilities, and product offerings aimed at addressing these key challenges.

Swissbit: A Brief History and Overview

Founded in 2001 as a spin-off from Siemens, Swissbit has evolved into a leading European manufacturer of industrial-grade memory and security solutions. The company now has over 400 employees across 3 continents, serving more than 5,000 customers globally. A key differentiator is Swissbit’s state-of-the-art production facility in Berlin, Germany, which opened in 2019 and has a capacity of 3 million units per month.

“We have a global presence across three continents – North America, Europe, and Asia,” explained Matthias Poppel, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer at Swissbit. “Many of our 5,000+ customers we serve directly, but we also work through distribution channels and even e-commerce companies.”

Poppel emphasized Swissbit’s focus on B2B customers, this is not a B2C operation. The company’s strategic focus on industrial and enterprise applications is central to Swissbit’s value proposition.

Core Product Offerings

The company’s product portfolio spans three key areas:

  1. Reliable Data Storage: Industrial-grade memory solutions optimized for demanding environments and long product lifecycles.

  2. Data Protection: Encryption and secure boot capabilities to safeguard sensitive information.

  3. Digital Identity & Secure Access: Authentication and access control solutions to protect digital identities.

Swissbit targets several key market segments with its offerings, including industrial automation, enterprise networking/communications, edge computing, transportation, critical infrastructure, defense, and public sector/government agencies.

Industrial-Grade Storage Solutions: Reliability in Extreme Conditions

Grady Lambert, General Manager of Swissbit North America, provided more details on the company’s storage solutions, which are designed for applications requiring high reliability, endurance, and longevity.

“We’re not manufacturing and designing devices for consumer applications, but only for industrial applications,” Lambert explained. “Reliability can be temperature range, the number of read/write cycles, mortality rates – all of those types of things go into design and validation.”

Lambert highlighted how Swissbit’s industrial-grade products are built to withstand extreme temperatures and harsh environments. For example, automotive-grade products are rated for up to 105°C, pushing the limits of NAND flash technology.

“It’s all about the base station or those radios sitting out in the tower,” Lambert said. “You’re in a box dealing with environmental conditions, and there’s no airflow essentially. So they want to see that SSD works up to 115°C reliably.”

This focus on reliability and longevity is critical for Swissbit’s customers, who often deploy equipment expected to operate for 5-10 years or more in the field. Lambert noted that while consumer-grade storage may be cheaper upfront, the total cost of ownership is often much higher when factoring in potential field failures and damage to brand reputation.

“Do you pay the price up front or do you pay the price afterwards when you have to pull back from the market, repair, send people out to the customer and pull the devices out of the field?” Lambert asked rhetorically. “That’s the price you can’t put the cost on – the damage to your brand.”

Protecting Digital Identities: Hardware-Based Authentication

On the security side, Chris Collier, IAM Technologist at Swissbit, discussed the company’s solutions for protecting digital identities through hardware-based authentication. A key focus is on FIDO2-compliant security keys that enable phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication.

“We’re going to talk more about getting rid of passwords,” Collier explained. “You’re going to hear these things – even if it’s just for your personal gain, because it’s good information to have right now.”

Collier highlighted how traditional password-based authentication remains a major security vulnerability for organizations. He cited statistics showing that 90% of internet users are concerned about password compromise, while 53% still rely on memory to manage passwords. Moreover, compromised credentials are the root cause of 61% of data breaches.

To address these challenges, Swissbit has developed its iShield family of security keys. These USB and NFC-enabled devices support FIDO2 passwordless authentication as well as other methods like one-time passwords. A key advantage is their phishing resistance compared to mobile authenticator apps or SMS-based codes.

“Phishing resistant MFA is phishing resistant because it’s passwordless,” Collier explained. “It’s not password plus the OTP, it’s not password plus the SMS notification to your phone with the code.”

He added that the iShield keys also support enterprise attestation and zero trust security models, which are becoming increasingly important for organizations.

“Zero trust basically means I don’t trust you, I don’t trust the computer,” Collier said. “Everything has to be validated.”

Future Innovations: Expanding the Security Portfolio

Looking ahead, Swissbit is expanding its security key portfolio with new products like the iShield Key MIFARE, which will combine FIDO authentication with physical access control capabilities. The company also recently announced a partnership with RSA to develop next-generation hardware authenticators for government and enterprise use.

Addressing Embedded System Security

Beyond authentication, Swissbit is also addressing embedded system security through its Security Upgrade Kit. This microSD-based solution allows organizations to add encryption, access control, and other security capabilities to existing embedded devices.

Poppel explained the rationale behind this offering:

“How do our customers meet this type of requirements in the future? We talked about the long product lifecycle, difficult to update because it’s buried in the control system, it’s buried in a robot, it’s buried somewhere in the shop floor. Limited flexibility. These are the requirements that are there, that are coming up.”

The Security Upgrade Kit provides a way for customers to retrofit security capabilities onto legacy embedded systems, helping them comply with emerging regulations and standards around IoT security.

Vertically Integrated Approach: From Design to Manufacturing

Throughout the IT Press Tour briefing, Swissbit executives emphasized the company’s deep expertise in industrial-grade storage and security solutions, built up over 20+ years. This includes capabilities spanning hardware design, firmware development, manufacturing, and integration of security features.

“We do the design of the modules, we manage the hardware, we put firmware on top, we even put certificates – security certificates on top of that in our fab in a secure room,” Poppel explained. “And we’re manufacturing everything ourselves, and then we bring this total solution to our customer.”

This vertically integrated approach, combined with a focus on quality and long-term support, has enabled Swissbit to build strong relationships with major OEMs and industrial customers. The company sees opportunities to expand its presence, particularly in North America where brand awareness is still growing.

“I joined Swissbit 10 years ago and I knew of them because I was in this business. But there’s still a lot of customers in North America that still don’t quite know the Swissbit brand,” Lambert noted. “So that’s something that we’re constantly working on.”

As digital transformation and cybersecurity concerns continue to drive demand for trusted data and identity solutions, Swissbit appears well-positioned to grow its industrial and enterprise customer base. The company’s “Made in Germany” manufacturing, long-term support commitments, and expanding portfolio of storage and security products provide a compelling value proposition for organizations deploying mission-critical embedded systems and IT infrastructure.

Positioning for Future Growth in a Changing Cybersecurity Landscape

With major technology shifts like passwordless authentication and zero trust security models gaining momentum, Swissbit’s investments in FIDO-based security keys and embedded security solutions also align well with emerging enterprise requirements. As Collier summed up:

“While Swissbit is a newer player in the market, we have already created more competitive advancements in the technology and form-factor than key competitors. The future is passwordless.”

For organizations looking to ensure the integrity and security of their data and digital identities across increasingly complex and distributed systems, Swissbit aims to be a trusted long-term partner. As the company continues expanding its presence globally, it will be a vendor to watch in the industrial storage and embedded security markets.
