Based in Boston, Mass., the company employs 300 people across the globe and has raised $140M to date in two rounds of funding from Bain Capital Ventures, Acrew Capital, Atlassian Ventures and Cisco Investments.
This week, HYCU announced a free tier of HYCU Protégé for AWS. VMblog spoke with Director, Product Marketing Andy Fernandez on what the new free tier is, why it’s important and how it works.
VMblog: It has been a busy Summer for HYCU, with the recent $53M Series B, introduction of HYCU Protégé for AWS on the AWS Marketplace and now a Free Tier, why is this new initiative important?
Andy Fernandez: As organizations adopt the public cloud rapidly, protecting their data and instances in the cloud becomes crucial. Customers can leverage scripts and integrations to perform basic backup operations using cloud snapshots. Managing snapshots and scripting requires lots of time and resources to protect and recover data. The public cloud is meant for organizations to accelerate application development and not spend extensive time and resources keeping the lights on. Users need a service that automates their backup and disaster recovery, not a series of scripts or tools.
VMblog: How does HYCU Protégé for AWS – Free Tier work?
Fernandez: We have announced a free tier of HYCU Protégé for AWS. It’s a purpose-built, cloud-native backup and disaster recovery service for AWS customers. For free, customers can protect and recover EC2 instances without scripts or hours and days of management.
It offers additional protection for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances. and is delivered as a fully managed backup service that offloads and automates data protection tasks. We leverage Amazon Block Store (Amazon EBS) Snapshots to create impact-free, application-consistent copies of the data. Cloud and DevOps admins who have struggled to find a cloud-native backup solution can protect their data in minutes.
Customers can easily protect and recover EC2 instances from deletions, logical failures, and even outages using the free tier. Using HYCU Protégé for AWS – Free Tier, customers will have the following capabilities:
- Complete visibility of their environment and protection status
- Snapshot management. Use AWS native snapshots to perform snapshots with automated policies designed to set and forget.
- Simple, granular recovery. Recover an entire EC2 instance or specific files, folders, or disks.
- Disaster Recovery. Perform simple cross-region recovery in case of an outage.
- Notifications and reporting. Easily enable notifications for all backup activities and create daily reports.
This means that Cloud and DevOps teams can go back to doing what they do best, application development, and set and forget their data protection operations, knowing that they have the assurance things are working the right way.
VMblog: What makes this different from other options available for AWS users?
Fernandez: AWS customers have only had the choice to use native snapshots and protect and recover using scripts or to re-purpose traditional on-premises backup. Unlike these options, using HYCU, customers can:
- Leverage native snapshots without scripts or agents
- Utilize a fully managed service that doesn’t require installation, configuration, or sizing.
- Perform cross-region disaster recovery and granular restores using one interface
VMblog: How can someone learn more about HYCU Protégé for AWS – Free Tier?
Fernandez: Anyone interested in learning more about HYCU Protégé for AWS – Free Tier should check out HYCU Protégé for AWS – Free Tier or follow @hycuinc and connect with HYCU on LinkedIn.
VMblog: What is next for HYCU and what can we expect with the effort in developing the Free Tier for AWS?
Fernandez: At HYCU, we have always been focused on creating solutions that make data backup and recovery more accessible without limits, unnecessary hardware or software, and also that make the world a safer place by removing the growing threat of ransomware and human error. As we continue to say, in many ways, we are just getting started. We’re excited to introduce this new solution for AWS customers, and we believe it will be well received. When we were at AWS Summit Anaheim 2022, the interest from AWS customers was significant.
