Efficiency is the Key to 2023

Cost savings are a big focus headed into 2023, and that’s likely to sustain through 2024. This will require DevOps teams to increase their workflow efficiency. Tools that deliver measurable gains in efficiency will continue to flourish. Headcount is the most expensive portion of most DevOps organizations, so tools that allow fewer operators to do more will be key. In Codefresh’s domain, we anticipate users gravitating to offerings like our unified CI/CD/GitOps platform that provides high levels of insight and clarity to make it easier to get by with fewer people. Likewise, using approaches like shared pipelines means a dramatically lower footprint on CI maintenance.
Among other predictions for 2023:
- Crossplane will probably pass the early adopter (and hype) phase in 2023. The community will solve some of the scale challenges and start to move Crossplane into the mainstream by the end of the year.
- Argo CD will be graduated as an open-source project in 2023 – probably earlier. With Argo CD’s graduation, we’ll see continued adoption and growth from the project as more and larger companies feel confident to move forward in adopting.
- With Argo CD, in 2023 we’ll see a number of improvements for scale, security and application lifecycle.
- Terraform isn’t going anywhere in 2023. Over the next two years, it will become the Jenkins of infrastructure management: the tool that everybody uses and won’t go away for a very long time – if ever (even with new players like Crossplane and Pulumi coming on strong).
- There will be massive market consolidation in 2023, in DevOps and more broadly. A lot of the companies founded as startups last year will either be acquired or go out of business. So we’ll potentially see a lot of tools merging next year.
- GitOps will continue to gain traction – it’s arguably already the definitive way to deploy software. This will gain even more momentum in 2023 and we’ll see GitOps extending far beyond cloud native tools like Kubernetes.
- Conferences won’t make a big comeback in 2023. Many in the tech community had hoped that conferences would rebound, but it will probably take them a few years to recover. Vendors and attendees alike are on edge about the potential for recession and are hesitant about investing in business travel. Compound this with lingering Covid concerns, and it could be several years before conferences come back to full strength. Virtual/online event participation – which gained popularity during Covid – will remain a popular option for some, and this may put a dent in in-person conference attendance in the years ahead.
