Sysman: AI is objectively one of the biggest threats in cybersecurity today, but it is also one of the biggest opportunities to enhance security solutions. Day to day, the biggest threat that AI poses to security teams is the AI that they or an organization’s employees introduce into their environment. AI is a focus for security teams because they think it needs to be, but they don’t know where to put that focus to make the most impact, or how to leverage AI to improve their business operations. Some teams try to protect everything that AI could touch – this is a mistake, and could lead to costly mistakes in other areas because it spreads security personnel too thin. The best thing teams can do is to learn, be flexible, and let AI evolve slowly. Going too fast with AI will invariably lead to bigger security problems down the line.
VMblog: How can security leaders better prepare their organizations for the evolving threat landscape in 2025 and beyond?
Sysman: At one point, security leaders thought the best thing they could do for their organizations is to have complete visibility into all of their assets with an understanding of how they all work together. While this is still a critical need, today’s threat landscape is constantly evolving, and amid ongoing talent shortages security teams are struggling to keep up. Visibility is not enough – teams now need actionability. Visibility without action creates operational drag. They need the ability to fix misconfigurations, close security gaps, and optimize performance intelligently, automatically when appropriate, and at scale. This is the only way for security leaders to stay ahead of evolving threats, and to be able to correctly triage threats if they enter their environment.
VMblog: What is your message to RSA attendees coming out to the show this year?
Sysman: This is a transformative year for cybersecurity. We have never faced so much uncertainty, and security teams can feel overwhelmed by it all. However, RSA represents the best of what we as a community have to offer for protection. Attendees should know that what they are seeing from vendors is the culmination of years of work, due diligence, and understanding of what the industry needs most.
