Supersimple is a business intelligence platform designed specifically for fast-growing SaaS companies looking to extract valuable data insights quickly. As explained in this VMblog Q&A with Marko Klopets, the CEO and co-founder, Supersimple allows anyone to answer complex ad-hoc data questions in minutes without needing to code. It provides all the features expected from a modern data tool like shareable reports, alerts, and a semantic layer.
The key problem Supersimple solves is enabling companies to gain true data insights beyond just high-level dashboards. Legacy BI tools were built for static reporting, but as Klopets notes, the real value comes from ad-hoc questions that teams have multiple times per week. Supersimple empowers anyone to explore this data in a no-code way, freeing up data teams from constant firefighting.
VMblog: What does Supersimple do?
Marko Klopets: Supersimple is a business intelligence tool designed for fast-growing SaaS companies. It allows anyone to answer complex ad-hoc data questions in minutes. Of course, it also does everything else you’d expect from a modern data platform, such as having beautiful shareable reports, alerts, a semantic layer, and more!
VMblog: What problems does Supersimple solve about the way companies use data?
Klopets: Most of the time, valuable data insights come from very deep and specific questions. Legacy data tools were built for building static dashboards, which are helpful for getting a high-level recurring overview, but not for gaining real insights.
Supersimple was designed specifically for these ad-hoc questions that pop up many times a week in every team. We let anybody explore data with zero code to get these answers without having to always go through a data team.
This means data teams are freed up to work on empowering the rest of their company, instead of the constant firefighting!
VMblog: Who is your typical customer? What are some of their use cases?
Klopets: Our typical customer is a fast-growing B2B SaaS company. As those companies start to scale after reaching product-market fit, they start getting a lot more quantitative and data-driven in their decision-making.
Product, customer success and growth teams find the most value in data, which often revolves around customer behavior in some way, shape, or form. Some of these questions are about broad trends, while others are about things like investigating specific problem areas or checking up on specific customers to better serve them.
VMblog: What led you to start Supersimple?
Klopets: There were many triggers and it wasn’t a straight path! As an engineer, I found myself spending a lot of time trying to give our teams data about how our products are being used. Coincidentally, I also ended up building out customer-facing reporting tools at several startups I worked at.
Later on, as a product manager, I suddenly found myself being terrible at actually using data in my day-to-day. I had the technical skills, but data analysis always felt like a separate mode of operation that I needed to get into.
I started Supersimple to bring the friction of answering any data question way down – with the insight that most of the real value in data comes from these more ad-hoc questions.
VMblog: What makes Supersimple’s natural language AI unique?
Klopets: Since ChatGPT started the latest AI hype wave, there have been countless companies integrating a simple GPT-based SQL generator into their products. They convert plain English questions into SQL database queries.
In the early days of Supersimple, we learned that for humans to trust the data they see, they need to deeply understand what this data is, where it comes from, and what exactly it means.
Because of this, Supersimple’s AI answers plain English questions by directly interacting with our platform. Using a few no-code steps, it transparently explains all of its work. This means there’s no SQL to double check, meaning it can truly be used and trusted by anyone in the company.
VMblog: What does the future hold in store for Supersimple?
Klopets: Our mission at Supersimple is to make sure everyone has access to the information they need in order to make great decisions and to build great companies. While we currently focus on structured data from data warehouses, there are a lot more different types of data that make up an organization’s collective knowledge. These include things like emails, knowledge bases, Slack messages, calendars, and much more.
We think the future of what we today call “business intelligence” will fuse together all of these things, and integrate a lot more deeply with our everyday workflows. We’re extremely excited about this future and look forward to sharing more about advancements there soon!
