Two words for next year: Disaster recovery

With the end of the year quickly approaching, it’s time to predict what we think will be hot topics for cloud and virtualization in 2016. Two words: Disaster recovery. End of story.

Just kidding. There’s more to this story, of course, and we wanted to share a couple thoughts from what we’ve been noticing from the frontlines of our customers as they plan for next year.

Here are some predictions for what 2016 will bring:

Disaster recovery will be a game changer

The ability to use the cloud as more than a storage location for data has been a game changer to the industry.

  • The ability to use the cloud as more than a storage location is a game changer
  • Tier 2 or tier 3 workloads are being viewed as more and more critical, requiring DR in order to meet ever-tightening SLAs
  • However, there’s not enough budget to support DR in the traditional, replica-hardware-at-a-secondary-site sense, so they need a utility model resource like the cloud where they can pay only for what they use instead of making a large capital investment

Don’t forget about backup & recovery

  • Backup & recovery is often an afterthought of cloud adoption
  • Many forget about backup & recovery or just assume it’s built-in to the replication offerings of the cloud provider
  • Organizations need to remember to plan for backup and recovery methodologies that can span the on-prem or off-prem; physical, virtual, or cloud, etc. without implementing a bunch of new point tools that cause management silos.
