In a recent survey, 74% of respondents said that digital transformation would be one of their top priorities this year. As we find ourselves already a quarter of the way into 2024, questions arise: how many organizations were successful in this goal, and if they were, what’s next for them? Digital transformation is pretty vague, after all, so a successful transition into the digital age might look different from organization to organization, and with so many tools available, there’s one thing at the top of every organization’s mind – monetization.
In the supply chain industry, digital transformation is an ongoing journey, because each piece of the supply chain relies on the one preceding it and those pieces are ever-changing. The road to digital transformation isn’t one-size-fits-all, and every day, more tools come out to make sure the supply chain runs as efficiently as possible. Even within the same industry, each organization has its unique needs and challenges, and they will need to apply tools differently. For some, achieving digital maturity might mean implementing AI-driven predictive analytics to optimize supply chains, while for others, it could involve leveraging blockchain technology to secure transactions. However, the one predominant belief from this survey is that within the next 6-15 months, GenAI in the supply chain will be the transformative tool that will become monetizable.
How Digital Transformation and Monetization Will Play Out
In 2024, it will begin to become apparent which organizations were thoughtful and meticulous about digital transformation and which organizations rushed into it to try and stay on trend or ahead of the competition. The amount and caliber of GenAI tools becoming available to organizations to aid on this quest are both a blessing and a curse – if you know how to use them, the move toward digital transformation will be smooth and easy, but if not, the result will be scattered at best and a waste of time and money at worst.
For organizations that successfully navigated the initial stages of the digital transformation journey, the focus will now shift to consolidation and optimization, wherein the application of GenAI will be about integrating it seamlessly into existing processes to maximize efficiency instead of simply getting the systems up and running. Those who strategically deployed the initial digital transformation tools to enhance customer experience, streamline operations, and foster innovation will find themselves in a more advantageous position. Basically, so long as they stayed on top of the game all along, organizations will find themselves poised to monetize GenAI.
On the flip side, some organizations, in their eagerness to stay on top of the digital transformation trend, hurriedly embraced tools like GenAI without a thorough understanding of its true application. While GenAI promises things like automation, data-driven insights, and enhanced collaboration with suppliers, if organizations rushed to adopt simply for the sake of it, without having the proper foundations in play, they won’t get full value out of it. Of course, organizations also can’t afford to get behind, so if they’re unsure of what the tool can do for them or the place to start, the best thing to do is ask.
In addition, for those who rushed into integrating this technology without a comprehensive grasp of what it can do, the promised benefits of GenAI may remain just out of reach. Without the necessary expertise or a partner well-versed in GenAI nuances, organizations will see an inefficient utilization of tools. This will result in an inability to tailor AI-enabled solutions to their specific organizational needs and that, though organizations will have walked the walk, ultimately, they won’t be able to talk the talk – and monetize. Organizations need to focus on not just simply adopting GenAI, but in doing so with a strategic understanding and a capable partner who comprehends its complexities and can customize solutions for optimal outcomes.
Transformation is Never-Ending
As we move ever further into the deployment of GenAI in essentially all facets of our lives, the differentiation between leaders and followers in the digital landscape will become increasingly pronounced. Organizations that approached digital transformation as a holistic journey, involving not just technology but also cultural and operational shifts, are likely to emerge as frontrunners in their respective domains, and will be able to monetize GenAI sooner rather than later. Conversely, those who hastily adopted digital solutions without aligning them with their overarching strategy might face hurdles and setbacks.
One thing is clear: the successful navigation of digital transformation and GenAI implementation requires a strategic mindset, a clear roadmap, and a deep understanding of how technology aligns with overarching business objectives. As we forge ever further, the spotlight will be on those who wielded the arsenal of digital tools wisely and effectively, paving the way for a more resilient and future-ready business landscape.
