Virtual IT infrastructure market leader VMware today reported it had boosted third quarter revenues over the same period last year by 86 per cent to US$189 million. The company said this was the highest growth rate in five quarters.

In the first half of 2006, VMware's revenue was $288 million, compared to total revenues in 2005 of $387 million. In 2004, annual revenue was $218 million, compared to $100 million in 2003.

The company says this revenue was fuelled by adoption of VMware Infrastructure 3, the third generation of its virtualisation software suite that shipped in June of this year.

Also driving growth was announcement of a new Mac product that allows Mac users to deploy VMware's virtual platform.

More than 20,000 companies now run VMware technology, including 99 of the Fortune 100 companies.

California-based VMware was founded in 1998 to bring virtual machine technology to industry-standard computers. It is a 100 per cent-owned subsidiary of EMC Corporation.
