The Australian IT searches for a light at the end of the tunnel for its Australian IT community. Virtualization could be one such highlight.
In the mundane world of the server room, there's something of a revolution going on, as system builders marry cheap X86 server technology to the latest server virtualisation software from companies such as EMC's VMware.
"One trend that stands out -- by far bigger than anything else - is server virtualisation. It is bigger than Ben Hur this year," Intelligent Business Research analyst Kevin McIsaac says.
"What people are doing is slicing up their machines into virtual servers."
At Dell, local chief Joe Kramer says, the server virtualisation trend will restore some of the gloss to the company's fortunes, which took a beating last year with management changes, lacklustre financials and exploding laptops.
"The Australia-New Zealand region has the fastest rate of virtualisation adoption in the world just now," he says.
