Victory Challenge set sail with virtualisation

Quoting ComputerWeekly

The Victory Challenge team competing in the 33rd America's Cup sailing tournament next year will use virtualisation technology for disaster recovery of its key navigation and weather forecasting systems.

Tight deadlines and budgets dictate that the Victory Challenge team has to work as efficiently as it can. Any setback or loss of information could cost the team valuable time when racing.

The crew will use software from VMware to mirror key systems which includes over 50 workstations and laptops, a production and test environment and severs which compile race data.

"The team here depend on a high availability of information in real time when racing. If a particular machine or piece of hardware fails, knowing you can just run the same application and environment on another server within a few seconds can be vital in winning a race," said Eric Ernst, IT manager with the Victory Challenge team.

The team will also continue its use of software from Securewave to enable only authorised devices to connect to network servers, laptops or computers. Only whitelisted applications will be able to execute on endpoints and control what is loaded onto the Victory Challenges network.
