STORServer, Inc. Announces STORServer Agent for VMware Consolidated Backup at VMworld 2007
STORServer®, manufacturer of the all-in-one suite of Business Continuity Appliances, announces today the STORServer® Agent for VMware® Consolidated Backup. To address the challenges of protecting VMware environments, the new backup agent enhances the recently released STORServer Appliance for VMware Consolidated Backup by improving the usability of Consolidated Backup. The STORServer Appliance for VMware Consolidated Backup, announced in April, was the first backup appliance on the market to protect vulnerable VMware environments.

The STORServer Agent for VMware Consolidated Backup controls the backup for each virtual machine by integrating the VMware Consolidated Backup utilities and TSM backup-archive client, eliminating the need for complicated and sometimes cumbersome pre- and post-processing integration scripts.

VMware Consolidated Backup streamlines backup and recovery of VMware ESX virtual machine data by offloading backup processes to a proxy server, such as the STORServer VCB appliance, said Lauren Whitehouse, analyst for Enterprise Strategy Group. With its new agent, STORServer eliminates pre- and post-scripting, tackled integration complexity and provides advanced capabilities, such as concurrently scheduled backups.

The Agent includes an easy to use graphical user interface for the management and reporting of virtual machine backups; a robust scheduler which provides a wide range of scheduling options; and a highly functional database that contains client configuration, logs, and scheduling information.

The Agent enables users to perform parallel backup execution and removes the need for a Tivoli Storage Manager schedule and scheduler service for each virtual machine backed up.

The STORServer Appliance for VMware Consolidated Backup is a fully integrated enterprise solution including all hardware, software and services for centralized LAN-free backup of virtual machines on VMware ESX Servers. The STORServer Appliance combined with the STORServer Agent eliminates the need for backup client software on individual virtual machines and ESX Servers and protects all enterprise systems and applications, both physical and virtual. As with all STORServer Appliances, there is one single point of contact for training, warranty and support on the STORServer Appliance and Agent for VMware Consolidated Backup.

We are really excited to introduce a software component that will eliminate the need for the VMware Consolidated Backup TSM integration module, said Laura Buckley, STORServer vice president of product development. This will greatly improve VMware Consolidated Backups usability as it eliminates the integration module scripts and custom scripts, reduces the number of schedules to be managed, reduces the number of TSM option files to be managed and provides a central reporting interface.

The Appliance is industry compliant with policy-based data retention for backup and archiving. From small to large organizations, the STORServer Appliance for VMware Consolidated Backup is a scalable solution that grows alongside the users business. It easily incorporates new technologies and does not require replacement as the company expands.

The STORServer Appliance for VMware Consolidated Backup is a high-performing solution with disk-to-disk backup and restore capabilities. Quick and easy to install, learn and use, the Appliance takes just minutes a day to manage and saves important time and resources for businesses. There is a reduced local area network (LAN) load via SAN backup and intelligent data movement with the new backup agent; The Appliance off-loads backup from production virtual machines, ESX servers, and LAN; and the eliminates virtual server downtime during backup.
