AMD Joins Eclipse Foundation, Helping Unite the Power of Open Source and Multi-Core Processing
As part of its commitment to supporting and contributing to open standards, AMD (NYSE:AMD) today announced its participation in the Eclipse Foundation. AMD will add its rich expertise and history of collaborative innovation to the Eclipse community, helping to drive the standardization of an extensible development platform and application frameworks that can harness the power of x86 architectures and multi-core processing. AMD made the announcement in conjunction with Eclipse Summit Europe 2007, taking place Oct. 9 11 in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

AMD joins a prestigious group of companies and individuals devoted to establishing and standardizing an open, extensible development platform and application frameworks, said Mike Milinkovich, executive director, Eclipse Foundation, Inc. We look forward to AMDs contributions to our open source community.

Recently introduced, native Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors continue AMDs tradition of reducing the total cost of ownership for the enterprise and enabling solutions that meet customer needs. By achieving four x86 processing cores on a single die of silicon in a consistent thermal envelope, AMD has significantly advanced the performance capabilities of AMD Opteron processors, while providing customers with increased energy-efficiency capabilities. Micro-architectural enhancements in AMDs native quad-core design, designed in collaboration with ecosystem partners, also enable performance advancements for software applications such as virtualization.

Todays announcement marks another milestone in AMDs ongoing effort to offer customers high-performing computing based on open standards, said Earl Stahl, vice president, Software Engineering, AMD. As we participate in the Eclipse community building development platforms and application frameworks, AMD will enable software created with Eclipse tools and plug-ins that is optimized for multi-core technology.
