Veeam releases new version of FastSCP for VMware ESX
Veeam Software, award-winning provider of systems management tools for VMware ESX Server environments, today announced that its popular FastSCP file management freeware for VMware environments has been downloaded more than 30,000 times. To mark the milestone, Veeam also introduced a new version of the free software with the enhancements most requested by customers.

“FastSCP is great software and has really helped us out,” said Tim Bell, network administrator, Environmental Science Corp., Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. “I’m glad to hear that Veeam has a new version with even more enhancements. My only comment to them is: ‘keep up the good work!’”

Veeam FastSCP is a fast, secure and easy-to-use tool for file management in VMware ESX environments that completes file transfers up to six times faster than alternative solutions. FastSCP allows a user to copy files from ESX to Windows, Windows to ESX or ESX to ESX.

“I’ve been using Veeam FastSCP for a while now,” said Wayne Bollingmoore, senior systems administrator, Griffith University, Queensland, Australia. “It’s a good product that saves me a lot of time and effort.”

Veeam FastSCP is widely used by ESX administrators for everyday management activity including:

  • Virtual machine deployment and management: copying ISO images and VM templates between ESX servers and between ESX and Windows servers
  • Storage migration: bulk virtual machine copy
  • ESX configuration backup and other file management tasks

“FastSCP was our first offering for the VMware environment, and we are extremely pleased with the great reception it has received,” said Ratmir Timashev, Veeam Software president and CEO. “We’ve been told by many people that FastSCP is the de facto standard for file management in VMware environments. We hope that those who find value in FastSCP will also take a look at our commercial products. FastSCP users should be especially interested in our new Veeam Backup – the 2-in-1 solution that combines backup and replication in a single product. Veeam Backup and FastSCP share the same interface, providing even more functionality from a single screen.”

FastSCP is fast because it uses full network capacity, delivering significant time savings when transferring large files. In addition, the tool does not require installing any additional services (daemons) on ESX. It uses SSH as a control channel to generate a one-time username and password for each file transfer session. Veeam FastSCP doesn’t require any ESX reconfiguration, and offers an intuitive Windows-like interface for file management.

The newly enhanced version offers additional capabilities including:

  • Disk space pre-allocation for vmdk files – when copying virtual machines, FastSCP will preallocate space for vmdk files to prevent fragmentation.
  • Ability to edit file attributes – FastSCP shows the properties for a file or folder, allowing users to set owner, group and permissions (the most common CHMOD commands) in a Windows GUI.
  • Scheduled copying – set file copies to occur at regular intervals or during off-peak hours.
  • Support for Linux systems – now users can manage all files in mixed Windows/Linux enterprises.

The new version of Veeam FastSCP is available immediately. An unlimited number of copies can be downloaded at no charge from www.veeam.com/vmware-esx-fastscp.html.
