Trigence AE for Windows Breaks Through Limitations of Virtualization 1.0
Trigence Corp., the leader in application virtualization solutions for the data center, today announced the availability of Trigence AE 3.2 for Windows. Trigence AE delivers the highest application-to-server density and superior performance with the lowest impact on latency when compared with any hypervisor-based approach. This sets a new standard for virtualized application performance and manageability on the Windows platform in the enterprise production environment.

Virtualization 1.0 products had a strong and positive impact on non-production environments like development and QA, said Greg OConnor, President and CEO of Trigence Corp. But the demands of the data center and the production environment require a radically new approach. We call Trigence AE for Windows the first Virtualization 2.0 product and believe it is the only product that can meet the requirements of virtualization for mission critical, production environment business applications.

Trigence AE meets data center production environment requirements because:

1. Applications virtualized using Trigence have radically less overhead than virtual-machine based technologies. Application response times are dramatically faster, and the architecture allows greatly improved virtualization density, the number of applications that can be deployed on a given server. In essence, compute resource contention is reduced to such a degree that Trigence environments have far greater scalability at far lower compute, license, and management cost.

2. Virtual machine technologies create large and rigid monoliths of application, middleware, and operating system code, known as an image. Trigence, by contrast, allows the creation of coarse-grained, isolated components that can be shared within and among virtualized applications. Rather than having to redevelop, retest, and rebuild applications in their entirety, Trigence data centers can deliver patches, updates, and changes and roll them back with far greater precision and at a faster pace.

Our customers have been deeply frustrated by the complexity and rigidity of the business application environments running in their data centers nowhere more so than on Windows. With Trigence AE for Windows, we can help them break up the hardened concrete of todays virtual machines. Trigence improves the performance of each Windows application running in the production environment, and increases the number of virtualized applications running on each piece of server hardware. said OConnor. But beyond this cost benefit, Trigence accelerates the implementation of business application changes by streamlining application lifecycle management, he said.

Four Attributes of True Application Virtualization

Trigence AEs breakthrough performance and management flexibility stems from adherence to four key concepts in the products architecture and design:

Encapsulation: Trigence allows you to define the collection of software, middleware, and OS components which define an application at a finer level of granularity than with virtual machine technologies. These components are assembled into capsules, and contain all application components, including registry values and files, necessary to their unit of functionality.

Isolation: In addition to the application, capsules include metadata about application and OS dependencies, called namespaces. This ensures that different combinations of application, middleware and OS versions, including updates and patches, can be managed in separate (isolated), protected contexts. Data center managers can be confident all components operate without runtime conflicts.

Inheritance: The configuration of the baseline OS, registry entries, directories and files (capsules namespaces) are parameterized and resolved only at runtime. IT can deploy precise component changes frequently accelerating the flow of business application updates.

Reuse: The pinnacle of application virtualization is achieved because capsules can be shared. Encapsulation, isolation and inheritance together enable a high degree of flexible reuse. Gone are the curse of component propagation and the challenge of managing the sprawl of versions, patches, and updates.

The Trigence Difference

The Trigence approach differs from the virtual machine or hypervisor approach in one critical dimension: Trigence AE does not include the OS kernel.

Freedom from the OS kernel means freedom from the root causes of the complexity, overhead and scalability challenges that rear up in the production environment. With Trigence AE, there is no need to emulate hardware devices or protected instructions in software. The complexities and duplication of memory resources required by a virtual machine are completely removed. Trigence virtual application environments require significantly less hardware resources and are far more scalable. Significantly, software systems contained within a true virtual application environment can be deployed on virtual machines as well as physical servers.

Virtualization 2.0

Virtualization 1.0 took the data center so far, but Virtualization 2.0, with Trigence AE, really delivers on the promise of the dynamic data center, said OConnor. Our customers are minimizing application backlog, and smashing IT bottlenecks, and in the process redefining the relationship between the business units and IT.
