One of the lures to get people into your booth at a trade show is to have a good booth giveaway, or chachki. During VMworld 2008, Falconstor had such a giveaway - the company planned on giving away a Segway to some deserving person wearing one of the company's bright orange T-shirts seen around the exhibitor showroom floor.
Like many other vendors with T-shirts at this and other shows, they entice people to wear (translation - advertise) their giveaway shirt, and at some point (in this case the end of the show) they do a drawing -- and the person must be wearing their shirt in order to win. Or at least, that's how it is supposed to work.
In this case, Falconstor told people in the audience the drawing was about to begin, and the winning name must be present and wearing one of the company's orange shirts. A name was pulled, the person was present, but he wasn't wearing the shirt (though he tried to put it on quickly). The audience began chanting for a new name to be drawn, but despite the fact that the announcements were made that the winner had to be wearing the shirt at the time of the drawing, Falconstor decided to give the non-shirt wearing person the Segway anyway.
Bad move! The audience reacted in a negative way. And it quickly turned ugly... shirts were thrown back at the Falconstor group in protest of the giveaway. Watch this video footage captured at the show!
