Half of All North American Developers to Be Using Virtualization Within 12 Months
More than one-third of North American developers are currently involved with virtualization projects and 51% expect to be within the next twelve months according to Evans Data’s North American Development Survey released to subscribers last week.

Virtualization pioneer VMware dominates the virtualization tools market with 56% of developers involved with virtualization using its tools, and only Microsoft’s Virtual Server is a significant rival with 37% usage. Xen products from Citrix and Red Hat trail behind. VMware solutions are dominant across all segments, whereas Microsoft is strongest amongst VARs, System Integrators, and outsourcers creating custom applications for outside clients.

"While virtualization has been a key area of focus, the current economic conditions and its associated downward pressure on IT budgets has made it even more of a priority,” said John Andrews, President and CEO of Evans Data Corp. “The ability to reduce hardware, energy, and overall operating costs coupled with faster server provisioning, with short term ROI, makes virtualization a very attractive solution.”

The survey report of 400 developers conducted in October and November examines a broad range of software development issues.

Among other findings:

  • While Javascript is still by far the most used dynamic language, Ruby has shown significant growth in the last year.
  • Two-thirds of North American developers are exploring SOA options for projects and 37% have at least some SOA components deployed.
  • Debugging tools are still ranked as the most important, though source control management tools and ALMs are almost as highly valued.
