Server manufacturer Sun Microsystems is set to unveil its new cloud computing services today. The Open Cloud Platform will offer storage and open-source computing applications, in which customers can access computing power from off-site servers, the company specified.
With the launch of the new service, Sun will come on par with online retailer Amazon.com, Inc., which has been offering cloud computing service since 2006.
Sun is seeking to open a new revenue channel for itself by taking advantage of the growing interest in the fledgling cloud computing market. Corporations as well as individuals have started to take an interest in cloud computing due to its biggest advantage, namely lower costs, when compared to the traditional and localized data servers.
Sun claims, "Cloud computing is all about efficiency. You can deploy and access everything from single systems to massive amounts of IT resources, on demand, in real time, at an affordable cost."
It will be interesting to see how they stack up to Amazon.
