Cassatt Adds Support for Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, Looking at Internal Clouds
Cassatt Corporation, a leader in providing software to make data centers more efficient and agile, today broadened its support for virtualization technologies to include Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, now generally available as part of the new 5.3 version of Cassatt Active Response. Enterprise customers can now more easily deliver internal cloud computing using the heterogeneous virtual and physical IT resources that they already have inside their data centers. The update also adds smarter policy control in failure scenarios for physical servers.

While cloud computing offers great promise in IT utilization and efficiency, many companies will not entrust their enterprise applications to external service providers. Cassatt Active Response provides customers with the automation and control software needed to implement cloud-style computing environments using the systems that already exist inside their own firewalls. Cassatt delivers the same operational efficiency, fault tolerance, and energy savings promised by external clouds, but without the worries over security, compliance, lack of control, or the costs or delays required to change or replace their current applications.

Cassatt previously supported management and control of virtualization technology from VMware and Citrix, and is targeting support for Microsoft Hyper-V next. With the addition of support for Parallels Virtuozzo Containers OS-level virtualization solutions, Cassatt Active Response can help improve data center management for hosting providers and other enterprises taking advantage of Parallels' technology.

In addition, the new Parallels Virtuozzo Containers support provides an automation and control solution for data centers with multiple virtualization technologies. According to data from Cassatt's forthcoming second annual data center trends survey, over two-thirds of IT organizations either already have more than one virtualization technology deployed or expect that to be the case over time.

"Our customers tell us that despite efforts at standardization, having multiple virtualization technologies in a data center is and will continue to be a reality that they must plan for," said Bill Coleman, chairman and CEO of Cassatt Corp. "Combine this fact with the extreme pressure that the economy is putting on IT operations, and the result is a keen interest in data center efficiency. Creating an internal cloud of compute resources that can be tapped as needed, directed by policies you set, can result in dramatic operational savings. Of course, internal clouds can't be limited to only one type of virtualization or operating system. With Cassatt, customers can control and optimize the many types of hardware, operating systems, virtualization, and network resources that they already have - and they can start today."

"Parallels Virtuozzo Containers is already widely deployed by a variety of customers for cloud-based applications," said Bryan Goode, vice president of business development at Parallels. "Now the combination of Cassatt and Parallels gives these customers a smart, practical approach to building internal clouds to improve data center efficiency. The Cassatt Active Response software can provide the platform for dynamically and automatically managing a mixed environment of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers and physical servers, providing customers with a cost-effective and adaptable internal cloud infrastructure."

The Cassatt Active Response 5.3 release also delivered improved automated policy control over physical servers. In the new version, customers can set more granular, application-specific policies to set shutdown timing for servers that applications are no longer using. In addition, if servers fail to follow a customer's shut-down policies, the Cassatt software can now either attempt additional ways to power off the equipment or leave it running for later administrator inspection. The smarter policies - added as a result of customer requests - mean less manual effort to manage physical servers, enabling customers to keep operating expenses to a minimum.

Today's update is a follow-up to Cassatt's November 2008 announcement of new technology and service offerings to help customers implement cloud-style computing environments inside the firewalls of their data centers using their existing systems, without having to modify their current hardware or software.
