PHD Virtual Technologies Announces Citrix Support and Investment as well as Product Name Change

At the beginning of the month, PHD Virtual Technologies announced that they were expanding their backup and restore technology beyond VMware ESX and vSphere support to also include coverage for Citrix XenServer.  So it was no surprise to me to find PHD Virtual at the Citrix Synergy conference in San Francisco last week.  While at the show, PHD Virtual was showing off an early copy of their backup software, giving the public its first look at what the company had planned for Citrix XenServer

Now, only a week after the show, PHD Virtual announces that in addition to its new support for the Citrix virtualization platform, Citrix is also investing money back into the company.  Who saw that one coming?

Today, the two came out and announced that an investment agreement has been signed, though the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.  Insight Venture Partners also made an additional funding investment in the company.  PHD Virtual said they will use the financing to accelerate its worldwide expansion and try to capitalize on the market opportunities that now exist with the additional support for Citrix XenServer and XenDesktop deployments.

"PHD Virtual Technologies is a prime addition to the rapidly growing XenServer ecosystem with the recent expansion of its enterprise-class backup and recovery offerings to include Backup for Citrix XenServer," said Andy Cohen, senior director of strategic development, Citrix. "The technology and team make PHD Virtual Technologies a strong partner and attractive investment opportunity. We look forward to working with them to meet the needs of joint customers and continue to grow our opportunities in the server virtualization market."

In addition to new product and investment news, PHD Virtual also changed the name of its flagship product.  The old and cleverly named esXpress product is now a bit more than a mouthful.  It is now known as PHD Virtual Backup for VMware ESX while the Citrix version will appropriately be called PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer.  Certainly not as cool a name, but, what with the multi-hypervisor support, one can understand why they had to make a name change.  Reminds me back in the day when Vizioncore changed its own backup software name from esxRanger to vRanger

PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer will be commercially available come September.  And also in September, PHD Virtual will be adding VMware ESXi to its line-up of supported hypervisors.
