EMC Corporation announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Greenplum, Inc. a data warehousing and data cloud developer based out of California. EMC plans to use the company as the basis for a new data computing product division in its Information Infrastructure business.
Greenplum utilizes a unique distributed computing architecture for analytical processing using virtualized machines. The company's solutions are in use by companies such as NASDAQ OMX, Skype, Equifax, and T-Mobile.
The acquisition is expected to be an all-cash transaction, to be completed in the third quarter of 2010. Current Greenplum CEO Bill Cook will lead EMC's new data computing product division, while EMC will continue to offer and support Greenplum's current products.
