AMD Contest: "Pinning Down the Cloud" - Question #3: What Makes up the Ideal Cloud Infrastructure?

AMD has kicked off a new multi-week contest called "Pinning Down the Cloud" as we head into VMworld 2010.  Each week, AMD will be asking a question that dives into how people are incorporating the cloud into their lives and how they define it.  And we all know, defining the cloud can be a challenge, because it means a lot of different things to different folks.

This week's question is, "What Makes up the Ideal Cloud Infrastructure?"

I knew cloud was a hot topic, but I am amazed at both the number and the insightful answers you’ve submitted so far to the last two cloud related questions as we gear up for VMworld with our “Pinning down the Cloud” contest and Debate. To recap, so far we’ve drilled into “What is the cloud to you?” and “How do you use the cloud?

Because of the overwhelming responses so far, we want to dive a little deeper and ask you something that we think is a little tougher to define, or “pin down”, if you will.

What makes up the ideal cloud infrastructure?

For many, the cloud is a destination that data has a transient relationship with – it comes and goes, often with information being added or subtracted along the way, helping individuals to achieve an end goal or desired result. For some of us, we’ll only ever see what the service providers want us to see; that is the front end – the user interface that makes it all really rather easy to interact with, and use the cloud. For others, the IT managers and administrators among us, we also care about the hardware. You know – the bits and bytes. The equipment that, if it were not so ridiculously impressive, the cloud wouldn’t even exist – or at the very least, be worth using.

But of course there is more to the perfect cloud composition – think about virtualization solutions that make it easier to deploy, or the power efficiency that helps the cloud to stay cool.

So we ask you – what’s the perfect balance between each of these and the many more components that make up the ideal cloud infrastructure? Let us know what you think and throw your hat in the ring for a chance to walk away with a Dell Zino HD Desktop PC with AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 3250E Dual-Core Processor.

Once again, here are a recap of the rules and how to enter (in two sentences or less!):
