Wyse Launches New Family of Cloud PCs – Ready for Microsoft Windows 7 with Software Assurance

Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing, today announced another alternative to the traditional PC with a new family of Cloud PCs – specially designed diskless PCs that get their Windows OS, applications and data from a private cloud, rather than a local HDD, providing significant benefits in TCO, management and security over traditional desktops. This new family comes packaged with a Windows 7 license, and Microsoft Software Assurance eligibility, streamlining installation, licensing, and updates.

Wyse Cloud PCs provide an alternative to the traditional PC, utilizing cloud computing concepts to eliminate the local HDD in favor of server-based storage, providing the ability to run high-performance software on the desktop, but with security, manageability, energy use, and reduced TCO typically associated with a thin client.

Wyse Cloud PCs are also an ideal client option for desktop virtualization environments, where some applications must run on the local desktop for compatibility or performance, and all others on the VDI server. Wyse's inclusion of the Microsoft Windows 7 license makes these devices eligible for Microsoft Software Assurance, eliminating the need for an additional Microsoft VDA license. "We appreciate Wyse's use of the benefits of Microsoft Software Assurance as an integral part of the implementation of the Cloud PC solution," said Eddie O’Brien, Microsoft VP US OEM.

Wyse Cloud PCs are designed to work with enterprise streaming software in the private cloud, such as Wyse Streaming Manager. Wyse WSM requires only minimal server hardware to deliver OS, applications and content, eliminating the pains associated with managing and securing PCs with local hard disks. Cloud PCs receive their Microsoft Windows 7 streamed by WSM directly from the network on every boot, ensuring total security and manageability of the devices and the work environment. User data is stored in the datacenter, avoiding common data loss scenarios and virus propagation.

The new Cloud PC models include the Wyse R00L and Wyse R00LE, which both include bundled Microsoft licensing. These models provide a high performance environment while maintaining low power consumption of less than 15 watts.

"As virtualization at the desktop continues to take hold, Wyse continues to bring new thinking to the table," said Eddie O'Brien, Vice President US OEM at Microsoft. "The new R00L and R00LE cloud PCs are an innovative solution for Microsoft's enterprise customers looking for a full Windows client experience while gaining many benefits of cloud computing concepts."

"Cloud PCs take the simplicity and energy efficiency of PC desktops to new levels and demonstrate our continuing innovation in addressing the needs of our customers," said Param Desai, Sr. Director, Product Management at Wyse. "As a market leader in delivering smart, green, cloud-oriented virtual clients, the addition of Cloud PCs with bundled Microsoft licensing will further enhance the already rich portfolio of Wyse solutions available globally."
