PHD Virtual Improves Backup and Recovery Speed, Flexibility and Extensibility for Citrix XenServer Environments

PHD Virtual Technologies, pioneer and innovator in backup and recovery for virtual machines, today announced PHD Virtual Backup 5.1 for Citrix XenServer®.  This enhanced backup and recovery solution is purpose-built for the growing number of virtualized XenServer environments and is verified to work with XenServer as part of the Citrix Ready® program.  PHD's unique VBATM (Virtual Backup Appliance) architecture provides an integrated and scalable data protection solution for XenServer and is becoming a preferred choice for managed service providers.

PHD Virtual Backup 5.1 introduces several new capabilities including:

  • Advanced File Level Recovery - quickly recover files without the need to restore a full VM
  • Flexible Backup Storage - extended support for network based backup storage
  • Application Object Recovery  - Use your existing tools to quickly restore application objects (database object, mailbox, mail message, etc.) directly from backup storage
  • Support for Tape Backup Solutions - Quick and easy export to existing tape solutions
  • Enhanced Retention and Archiving - Policy based backup trim options; long term archiving

Purpose-built for virtualization, the PHD VBA architecture enables backup and recovery to be deployed as a virtualized workload directly on the XenServer platform. This evolutionary approach allows PHD Virtual Backup to leverage the advanced capabilities of the virtualization infrastructure and provides seamless scalability for large and distributed deployments.  Unlike alternative solutions, PHD Virtual Backup removes the need to deploy and manage a separate physical server or software agents for backup and recovery of the virtual environment.  Single pane of glass management is provided through direct deployment on XenServer and integration with its XenCenter® technology.  With support for XenServer, Citrix XenDesktop® and Citrix XenAppTM customers can leverage the same solution across their entire virtual environment.

"PHD Virtual is rapidly enhancing its XenServer backup solution to meet the evolving needs of the growing XenServer market," said N. Louis Shipley, Group Vice President and General Manager, XenServer Product Group, Citrix Systems.  "These enhancements provide our joint customers a robust, integrated and scalable backup and recovery solution as they accelerate the virtualization of mission critical applications on the XenServer platform."

"We have had great success with our deployment of PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer and we look forward to taking advantage of the enhanced capabilities in the new release," said Chris Chandler, Managing Partner, DH Innovations, LLC. "PHD Virtual Backup has provided us an efficient and scalable data protection solution for our hosted virtualization offerings.  We have found that the product is easy to use and seamlessly integrates data protection into our XenServer and XenDesktop environments."

"In the few short months our XenServer backup solution has been in the market, we have added over 200 new customers and are seeing growing adoption by managed service providers for deployments of XenServer and XenDesktop in cloud computing environments," said Thomas Charlton, Chairman and CEO of PHD Virtual Technologies.  "We have quickly followed up our initial launch of PHD Virtual Backup for Citrix XenServer with this valuable set of enhancements in the 5.1 release.  Our customers continue to affirm that our solution provides fast, efficient and easy to use data protection for their growing virtual environments."

Customers can dramatically accelerate reliable XenServer backup and recovery leveraging unique patent pending technologies included in PHD Virtual Backup:

  • TrueDedupeTM Technology - Source-side data deduplication dramatically reduces backup storage requirements by over 90% on average and optimizes network based backup efficiency.
  • TrueRestoreTM Technology - Provides increased confidence in the ability to successfully restore by verifying data integrity during both the backup and restore processes.
