Here is rPath's proposal: Instead of managing images, look upstream to the source of software, configuration and change—the stuff that goes onto the image itself—and manage that.

Once the contents of the image are under control as a set of version-controlled blueprints, the challenges of managing images fall away—because images become disposable.
