Socialtext Announces New Virtual Appliance Built for VMware

Socialtext, the leading enterprise social software provider, today announced the addition of a new deployment option that enables customers to run Socialtext on VMware. In a targeted effort to help IT leaders leverage virtualization investments inside their private cloud environments, Socialtext released the Socialtext Virtual Appliance. This new offering provides organizations with the ability to install social software securely behind the firewall and easily scale server resources as their use of Socialtext expands.

Why the Virtual Appliance?

According to Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT), a leading worldwide information technology research and advisory company, about 76 percent of IT departments are planning to invest in private cloud strategies by 2012. "Inquiries and surveys have consistently revealed a high interest in private cloud computing during the past six months," writes Thomas Bittman, a Gartner analyst. "This is especially true for larger enterprises, but, somewhat surprisingly, midsize enterprise interest also tends to be high…Many enterprises consider private cloud computing to be the next stage of virtualization — and, since they are virtualizing, it is the natural next step."

The virtual appliance adds to a rich set of deployment options offered by Socialtext. The company’s enterprise social software platform can be hosted in the cloud (single or multi-tenant), or on premises as a private cloud (a hardware appliance and, as of today, a virtual appliance). Regardless of which method a customer chooses, Socialtext performs all the updates and upgrades remotely, providing easy maintenance and a low cost of ownership for IT.

“Virtualization saves IT time, money and resources,” says Eugene Lee, Socialtext’s CEO. “As a SaaS company, we want to make it easy for our customers to run our software securely, whether that’s in our cloud or securely behind the firewall in their private cloud. This new offering provides yet another option for our customers who have made a commitment to VMware inside their company.”

“More and more, we see that employees want to work with tools that mirror the experience they have at home on services like Facebook and Twitter,” says Javier Soltero, CTO SaaS and Applications, VMware. “As they’re adopted, these social technologies can grow virally across a company. This new virtual appliance from Socialtext, built on VMware, gives our customers opportunity to install and manage these applications securely, scaling them appropriately.”

Socialtext: Empowering Your People

Socialtext's integrated social software platform delivers a deep set of collaboration tools to employees’ fingertips, such as social networking, microblogging, wikis, and blogs. Socialtext removes the typical friction associated with finding the relevant people needed to solve business challenges. In doing so, Socialtext empowers people to connect securely with the colleagues and information they need to perform their best work.

Business Friendly and IT Ready

The Socialtext Virtual Appliance is simple. With a VMware appliance image, IT leaders run Socialtext in their virtual infrastructure. Virtual Appliance customers receive easy upgrades and updates from Socialtext directly. This eliminates the need for ongoing maintenance, bringing IT the benefits of SaaS, with the security of on-premises deployment.
