This week at GigaOM's Structure conference, Big Switch Networks, a new company
building an OpenFlow-based platform to bring the benefits of virtualization and
cloud architecture to enterprise networks, talked about how networking hasn't
kept up with the innovation in the area of server virtualization and how
networking needs a VMware.
"OpenFlow was definitely one of the hottest topics at GigaOM's Structure
conference this year, and everyone was talking about ways to improve networking
for the cloud," said Janko Roettgers, GigaOM's New TeeVee.com Co-Editor.
"I think it's an incredibly exciting time for networking," said Guido
Appenzeller, Co-Founder and CEO of Big Switch Networks, during the From OpenFlow
to Virtualized Networks Session. "We have a kind of perfect storm in the
networking sector. There's a huge amount of upheaval in the market. It's open
warfare, and it's an incredible opportunity for startups."
During LaunchPad, Big Switch Networks Co-Founder Kyle Forster showed how Big
Switch Networks' OpenFlow-based platform for virtualizing networks in the
enterprise data center and campus LAN makes it possible for an enterprise to
overlay virtual networks on top of their physical devices, operating each of
these networks like one big switch.
