Desktop Virtualization and Cloud Client Computing Deployments Accelerate as PC Sales Slump Globally

VMworld 2011, Wyse Technology and VMware announced the accelerated success of worldwide implementations of customers using Wyse hardware and virtualization software in conjunction with solutions from VMware.  As part of VMworld 2011, Wyse is demonstrating their award-winning virtualization, management, and cloud client software and a wide range of thin, zero, mobile and cloud PC client hardware at Booth #1111.

“We are excited to see strong customer adoption of VMware View™ with Wyse Technology products across multiple industries,” said Vittorio Viarengo, vice president, End-User Computing, VMware. “This strong momentum is prompted by the operational efficiencies, cost savings, improved security and flexible user access that our joint solutions provide customers.  With the enhancements being delivered in VMware View 5, we look forward to further accelerating this joint customer momentum."

"Desktop and data center virtualization have provided tremendously successful framework upon which cloud computing is rapidly growing. We are pleased to continue our collaboration with VMware and key echo system partners to accelerate the growth of this industry," said Maryam Alexandrian-Adams, Senior Vice President Worldwide Sales and Channels at Wyse Technology.  "Customers large and small, and across all industries are seeing the benefits of the post-PC world by moving digital assets, and applications to the cloud and simplifying the end user desktop by deploying Wyse solutions optimized for VDI and cloud computing."

Customer Stories Document the Post-PC Era

One of the world's largest jewelry retailers, Jewelry Television is very rich with multimedia assets, and that extends to their virtual desktop deployment.  Incorporating Wyse TCX virtualization software, Jewelry Television's call center representatives stream the live TV show directly to their desktops so they can keep up with what the customer on the phone is actually watching.  Because of the innovative nature of Wyse TCX, this places no undue burden on the network despite the fact that approximately 300 CSRs are streaming multimedia live to their Wyse devices.  In fact, during the past four years, Jewelry TV has experienced virtually no failures in their call center.

In addition to implementing the Wyse ThinOS-based V10L with Wyse TCX virtualization optimization software for its call center, Jewelry TV also utilizes the Wyse P20 PCoIP zero client for its executives.  More information on the deployment at Jewelry Television is available at

"At a growing business like ours, we have to have technology partners that are constantly innovating," according to Kevin Nelson, Virtualization Architect at Jewelry Television.  "Wyse definitely does that.  With the new Wyse P20 zero client with built-in PCoIP technology, we are able to deploy zero clients to our corporate staff and have it perform better than a desktop or a laptop.  Our staff is extremely pleased with this solution."

With roots that go back more than 60 years, Gwinnett Medical Center encompasses two hospitals plus additional supporting medical facilities, with more than 4,100 employees and 800 affiliated physicians serving Gwinnett County, Georgia, just north of Atlanta.  Gwinnett has over 800 Wyse devices consisting of the Wyse V10LE, V90LE and P20 zero clients, all running on VMware View.

"Wyse has helped the IT team at Gwinnett get out of the business of keeping our PCs afloat and has allowed us to focus on projects that help improve patient care," according to Rick Allen, Assistant Vice President of Information Services at Gwinnett Medical Center.  "The Wyse devices we use in nursing areas and patient rooms are 'set it and forget it' and new ones can literally be installed in minutes."

The Board of Cooperative Educational Services of Nassau County (Nassau BOCES) provides the

56 school districts of New York's Nassau County with shared services, including career training for high school students and adults, teacher training, and dozens of programs to expand educational opportunities and help districts operate more efficiently.  By sharing and centralizing resources, the districts can benefit from services that they would otherwise be unable to afford.

In the first phase of the implementation, Nassau BOCES replaced 1200 of the Hempstead

District's 3,000 PCs with 900 Wyse desktop thin clients and approximately 300 Wyse mobile thin clients, all with Microsoft Windows Embedded. The district's labs and media centers are now thin client-only environments, and each classroom has a Wyse thin client to run a Promethean smart board.

"Seamless support for multimedia was the most processing-intensive task we thought the machines would need to be able to do, so we tested all the contenders on how well they could support full screen Flash," according to David Lasker, Data Center Manager at Hempstead School District.  "The Wyse thin client  and VMware View™ reliably delivered the split-second response time we wanted over a remote PCoIP connection.  Thin clients are Wyse's main business and not just a sideline, and I notice the difference in the attention and expertise of Wyse support staff."

New College Durham, a major college in the Northeast of England, is replacing their 1,200 PCs with a virtual desktop infrastructure based on Wyse P20 zero clients and VMware View.  The college reports that the migration to VDI is already transforming the computing experience for students and staff, delivering on promises of higher performance desktop computing, ease of management and cost savings.

"In the current economic climate, the lower upfront capital costs combined with much longer life expectancy with no reduction in performance delivers huge savings for the college.  We know that with the Wyse and VMware solution we have a desktop infrastructure that can support whatever changes occur to operating systems and software in the future," according to George Wraith, Head of Systems, New College Durham.  "In deciding to migrate to Wyse zero clients, we did a full ten year ROI analysis that came out at saving the College over £1 million.  We were deliberately conservative in this ROI and actually budgeted to replace the original P20s after 7 years and still got the stated savings."

SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp. is an enterprise that continues to revolutionize the mobile phone market in Japan. To seek further development and management efficiency, in November 2008 they had initially expanded Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) to Dalian, China. The company-wide information security policy requires that “confidential information should not be held locally.” Thanks to Wyse Technology's cloud client computing solutions, this could be achieved.

“At Softbank, we have been implementing the ideal combination of Wyse and VMware integrated solutions, which have enabled our IT environment to fully adopt VDI,” said Yoshiro Hirao, CIO at Softbank Mobile Corp./Softbank BB Corp./Softbank Telecom Corp. “Already, thousands of Wyse thin and mobile clients have been deployed domestically as well as internationally and we can clearly see the improvement in the IT maintenance work load as well as employees operational efficiency.  Leading technology solutions from Wyse and VMware has proven the ability to quickly adapt and respond to the changing needs of our business, which we find to be a great advantage of our VDI solution.”
