Freed-Hardeman University Selects Desktone for Cloud-Hosted Virtual Desktops

Desktone, Inc., the pioneer of Desktops as a Service (DaaS), today announced that Freed-Hardeman University (FHU) has selected the Desktone Cloud for its virtual desktop environment. With the Desktone solution, FHU can provide a complete, cost-effective desktop experience for staff and students on a variety of endpoint devices, including iPads, MacBooks and PCs.

“We wanted to take advantage of the flexibility and savings that virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) promises, but after examining the total cost of ownership (TCO) for building and maintaining on-premise VDI, we simply couldn’t justify it. The Desktone Cloud is the only solution that enables us to get all the benefits of VDI without the costs and complexity of an internal deployment—and with a TCO that is very easy to justify,” said Greg Maples, Director of Network Operations, FHU, a private Tennessee-based institution that provides graduate and undergraduate programs to about 2,000 students. “Like many universities, we’re also heavy users of iPads and MacBooks, and we really liked that we could use the Desktone Cloud to provision Windows 7 desktops to all of our devices.”

FHU was also impressed by its ease of use and scalability. “It’s extremely simple to get up and running with the Desktone Cloud, leverage our preferred display protocols, and add users as our needs grow. And since the virtual desktop experience is just like the traditional one, after only 10 minutes of training, our users are ready to go,” Maples added.

“We are pleased to add FHU to our growing list of university customers. The decentralized nature of end users and diversity of endpoint devices make VDI a logical choice, but the upfront costs and complexity of building a data center to support on-premise VDI is prohibitive to many institutions. The Desktone Cloud is ideal for universities like FHU who value the flexibility and affordability of VDI and don’t want to build a data center. As many of our customers have found, traditional shared session desktop and VDI products can’t provide the performance or ROI they require—and that the Desktone Cloud delivers. We’re pleased that FHU found Desktone’s solution to be so compelling,” said Peter McKay, CEO of Desktone.

The Desktone Cloud is the industry’s only purpose-built product for delivering virtual desktops in the cloud. The Desktone Cloud lets customers quickly benefit from virtual desktops at a cost starting at less than $1 a day—which is significantly lower than those typically associated with traditional VDI and desktop environments. By moving virtual desktops to the cloud instead of implementing an internally deployed and managed data center, universities and businesses can realize all the promised benefits of virtual desktops—centralized management, improved data security and simplified deployment—without the exorbitant cost or complexities of onsite VDI and Remote Desktop Services deployments. Desktone was recently named a “Major Player” in desktop virtualization by IDC, which cited the company’s current strengths and long-term strategy in delivering VDI solutions.
