Scale Computing Announces Launch of Mz Scale-Out Storage Nodes

Scale Computing, a developer and manufacturer of intelligent, scale-out storage solutions tailored to the virtualization and archiving needs of the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), today announced the availability of Mz models of scale-out storage nodes. Designed for increased performance, the Mz models of scale-out storage nodes feature 10GbE network connectivity.

Part of Scale’s M-Series, the Mz storage nodes feature 10GbE network connectivity, offering up to ten times the throughput for workloads that would be limited by 1GbE transfer rates. This performance advantage can affect single high-activity workloads or environments where the aggregate activity would exceed 1GbE transfer rates. The Mz storage nodes also deliver better performance with 1GbE clients. Faster node-to-node communication to manage network RAID operations translates to significant performance improvements even if the clients on the public network are not using 10GbE connectivity.

“As the volume of data stored by SMEs continues to grow at a rapid pace, so too does the demand for performance. Scale’s Mz line of storage nodes is a direct result of demand from our customers,” said Jeff Ready, CEO and co-founder of Scale Computing. “The Mz storage nodes are ideal for the vast majority of SME uses cases such as archiving, virtualization, virtual desktops, disk-based backup and some database loads. The Mz line of storage nodes is the next step in the evolution of unified storage, enabling the SME to reduce costs, increase control and make storage more convenient to manage.”

Scale Computing’s entire storage portfolio is based upon the company’s Intelligent Clustered Operating System (ICOS) technology, which enables users to add storage hardware, known as storage nodes, as needed - without suspending services or migrating data. IT managers are able to build out storage clusters, starting with just six terabytes (raw). As a unified storage platform, Scale’s line of scale-out storage solutions provides for simultaneous SAN and NAS services from a single pool of storage, providing enterprise-class, truly clustered and highly scalable storage. Scale’s storage portfolio aims to reduce costs while increasing control, as well as make storage management more convenient for IT administrators.

“As SMEs continue to adopt virtualization, many are learning the hard way that virtualization can also take a large toll on storage performance,” said Jeff Boles, senior analyst, Taneja Group. "It's really important that administrators start to think about the I/O density and performance they need given the amount of infrastructure they have. Scale Computing’s scale-out storage technology can help scale performance and capacity, ensuring that organizations are realizing the benefits of virtualization.”

Mz nodes are available in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB of storage capacity. To ensure shipment by the end of 2011, pre-orders must be placed by November 22, 2011.
