VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced that SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP Sybase ASE) running on VMware vSphere has achieved high performance levels comparable to results of physical infrastructure. The data further validates the value of virtualizing business-critical applications, such as security, support for application availability and disaster recovery, and reduction in time-to-market for deploying systems and applications.
With the successful testing of virtualizing SAP Sybase ASE, VMware will continue to collaborate with SAP to fully support the entire SAP database portfolio, including the SAP Sybase IQ server, SAP Sybase Replication Server and SQL Anywhere on VMware cloud infrastructure.
VMware, in cooperation with SAP, conducted testing across a range of configurations to compare the performance of SAP Sybase ASE running on a virtual machine versus directly on physical hardware. The results showed throughput on a high-transaction OLTP database running on virtual machines often matched that of an identical physical system.
Sybase has never asked its customers to reproduce on physical configurations, provided the virtual environment is certified by the operating system vendor and that operating system is certified by SAP/Sybase, which is unique within the virtualization industry.
Sybase has offered the licensing of a Sybase product on a subset of the CPUs available on a physical machine (sub-capacity licensing) on VMware for Sybase ASE and Sybase IQ products since 2010, helping customers realize the cost effectiveness of virtualization. These test results present another strong step toward demonstrating the commitment to validating and optimizing these solutions to work together seamlessly.
