Nicira Virtualizes the Network for Dutch IT Outsourcing Quality Leader Schuberg Philis

Nicira, the network virtualization company, today announced that Amsterdam based Schuberg Philis is deploying Nicira’s Network Virtualization Platform (NVP) as the foundation of a new private cloud-computing platform.

Schuberg Philis chose NVP to accelerate the onboarding of new and existing customer mission critical applications. Through providing greater automation and efficiency in data center operations, the company can now increase its focus on customers’ business and technical application management. Schuberg Philis joins Nicira’s growing roster of leading global service providers, IT providers and enterprise customers including AT&T, Calligo, DreamHost, eBay, Fidelity Investments, Rackspace and NTT who are benefitting from the new operational model delivered by network virtualization.

“In building Schuberg Philis’s new private cloud, we found that NVP provides network automation while simultaneously supporting our strict isolation and security requirements,” said Edwin Beekman of Schuberg Philis. “NVP allows us to utilize our infrastructure as a resource pool of capacity on-demand. We can ‘click-click’ provision all compute resources through our CloudStack management framework.”

Schuberg Philis’ private cloud for mission critical application infrastructures is based on integration between NVP and CloudStack. This work is now available to others after submission by the company to the open source community.

Network virtualization removes the barriers common to traditional networks. It offers multi-tenant network scalability and security, flexibility of workload placement and mobility, and elimination of error-prone manual reconfiguration, all challenges faced by large-scale cloud operators. It also provides rich network services, including Layer 3 and firewall services for supporting secure and rich applications.

“Nicira helps Schuberg Philis focus on their true core competency, technical application management, offering their customers control and flexibility,” said Alan Cohen, Vice President of Marketing at Nicira. “Their new cloud will vault them to the forefront of European computing innovation.”

NVP is a scalable software system implemented at the network edge and managed by distributed clustered controller architecture. The system forms a thin software layer that treats the physical network as an IP backplane. This approach allows the creation of virtual networks that have the same properties and services as physical networks. These virtual networks can be created dynamically to support VM mobility anywhere within or between data centers without service disruption or address changes.
