VMware WSX July Tech Preview Available

Back in March, you might remember we talked about a new experimental feature included in the VMware Workstation Technology Preview.  That feature was called WSX.  This feature is still HIGHLY experimental at this time, but they continue to make progress.  The yet to be officially named service enables users to access their Shared virtual machines via a web browser without installing any plug-ins or web controls. This service renders an HTML5 web page that can connect to your Workstation hosts or ESX servers (requires vSphere 5.0), enumerate the available virtual machines and allow you to power them on and interact with the desktop.

Today, the lead developer of this feature, Christian Hammond, announced a new release of WSX July Tech Preview, with many technical improvements.  Some of the recent new additions that are really cool include Retina support for MacOS X and iPad, and voice input.

With the July preview, some of the new additions include:

  • Improved Home Page - serves as a jumping point to get to your servers and to configure your server list
  • Improved Server Page - search for your VMs by typing part of their name, or filter them by power state
  • “Big Honkin’” Power Button - gives you both a nice visual showing what state your VM is in, and a big, easy to hit target for powering it on
  • Better Touch Input - working with your VMs on an iPad is now much, much nicer. We map a bunch of gestures to mouse events, giving you support for right-click, middle-click, and scrolling.
  • Mouse wheels
  • Better Retina support - if your VM was in Retina mode before, it should be in Retina mode when you connect next
  • SSL - WSX can now (optionally) encrypt all the traffic between the WSX server and your computer or mobile device
  • Easier Installation
  • Smarter Default
  • Various Performance Tweaks and Bug Fixes
