Lafarge Implements BlueStripe FactFinder for More Stable Physical and Virtual Infrastructure

BlueStripe Software today announced that Lafarge, a world leader in building materials, has implemented BlueStripe's FactFinder Transaction Monitoring Solution to help ensure that mission critical applications run at peak performance. Lafarge is using FactFinder throughout the application lifecycle, from monitoring live user transactions to certifying application upgrades and deployments.

"New infrastructure technologies within Lafarge enabled faster application deployment, but the resulting systems were so complex that they were difficult to understand and manage," said Mariano De Luca, Enterprise Infrastructure Architect at Lafarge. "With FactFinder, our Operations team knows exactly where transactions go and where they get stuck, making it easier to quickly solve problems and deliver appropriate service levels."

Lafarge first used FactFinder to examine performance issues with a new application for truck and materials dispatching. The initial application rollout was a success and performed as expected. When new virtual servers were deployed, however, Lafarge started seeing intermittent performance problems that they could not solve. As a result, the project was put on hold.

By tracking transactions across the infrastructure, FactFinder quickly determined that the problems were limited to only new virtual servers. Virtually converted physical servers didn't have the issue. Then, drilling into the Server stack, FactFinder ruled out the typical errors for these types of slowdowns and identified an obscure configuration issue caused by human error. Without FactFinder, the IT team would have had to manually cycle individual systems and examine hundreds of configuration and log files, hoping to see the problem.

Lafarge now uses BlueStripe to manage a number of critical business systems and projects, including a move of the company's ERP system to a Vblock environment, where FactFinder monitors the applications as well as the Vblock infrastructure. Added De Luca, "with visibility of transactions as they cross our Vblock systems, FactFinder allows us to track down and solve problems wherever they occur."

BlueStripe FactFinder automatically discovers, maps, and monitors all business transactions running across the infrastructure. FactFinder measures performance, hop-by-hop, everywhere that transactions go, across tiers, across platforms, and across architectures - even into virtual machines, private cloud, and third party services. When performance or availability problems occur, FactFinder follows the slow or hung transaction right to the problem component, and then drills down the server stack to determine why the problem occurred.

"Lafarge's adoption of FactFinder for IT Operations to monitor critical business applications and quickly solve performance issues is reflective of IT organizations throughout the industry," said Chris Neal, CEO of BlueStripe Software. "As enterprise applications become more complex, transaction monitoring solutions that understand the relationship between transactions, applications, and the infrastructure are critical."
