Q&A: Interview with Garantia Data Talking Redis Cloud and Memcached Cloud

Garantia Data, a provider of advanced in-memory NoSQL cloud services, recently announced general availability and pricing of its Redis Cloud and Memcached Cloud hosting services.  To find out more, I spoke with the company's CEO and co-founder, Ofer Bengal.

VMblog: Tell me more about Garantia Data and your most recent news announcement.

Ofer Bengal: Garantia Data offers cloud hosting services for Redis and Memcached datasets. Our in-memory NoSQL services are fully automated and free developers from dealing with nodes, clusters, scaling, data-persistence and failure recovery, while also providing true auto-scalability and instant failover. Following an extensive beta period, we've now launched the general availability and pricing of our Redis Cloud and Memcached Cloud hosting services.

VMblog: Can you explain to us what problem Garantia Data solves?

Bengal: While being one of the top three databases used by new apps today, open source Redis is still limited in scalability and complex in maintaining its high availability. Memcached, an older, open source key-value memory store that is used by companies such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Zynga and Netflix completely lacks reliability. Self-managing both is a demanding task, which involves launching or taking down nodes, clustering, scaling, updating server lists, overcoming data persistence issues, upgrading software, recovering from failures and stabilizing performance.

VMblog: And how does Redis Cloud and Memcached Cloud work?

Bengal: Our technology virtualizes multiple cloud servers into an infinite pool of memory, consumed by users according to the actual size of their datasets. A dataset is distributed in small chunks (shards) across multiple shards and multiple nodes, minimizing the recovery process from a node failure. Datasets are also constantly replicated, so if a node fails, an auto-switchover mechanism guarantees data is served without interruption. Garantia Data supports various data persistence options without compromising data integrity or throughput and latency. Users can also back up their datasets to a remote persistent storage for disaster recovery purposes.

With our Redis Cloud and Memcached Cloud, scaling is performed automatically. Shards autonomously inflate, deflate, multiply or reduce according to the dataset size and the measured performance of each shard. A dataset can continuously grow from a few megabytes to gigabytes, terabytes and even petabytes. Garantia Data's cloud services are completely "zero touch." A Redis database, or Memcached bucket, is created in seconds, and from that moment on all operations are fully-automated.

VMblog: How is Garantia Data different from other solutions in the market?

Bengal: Garantia Data offers the first in-memory NoSQL cloud services that enhances operations of Redis and Memcached, overcome their limitations and automate the operational processes associated with managing them in the cloud.  We offer a pay-as-you-go pricing model so users are charged by the actual size of their datasets rather than by cloud instances.

VMblog: Who uses Garantia Data's Redis Cloud and Memcached Cloud?

Bengal: Redis Cloud and Memcached Cloud are used by both enterprise developers and startups. We currently manage over 1,000 active customer databases, many of them being the production environments of these customers.

VMblog: So tell us, which cloud platforms are compatible with these services?

Bengal: Redis Cloud and Memcached Cloud are available on AWS (US-east and EU-West regions) and Windows Azure (US-East and US-West regions). As an add-on, Redis Cloud is also available on platforms-as-a-service Heroku, Appfog and AppHarbor.

VMblog: How will Garantia Data ensure that it can continuously deliver a stable and reliable service?

Bengal: We used our eight-month beta period to test the services in various real-world scenarios, and then made improvements based on those results. The services have already survived four AWS outages with no customer data lost, giving us the confidence that they will continue to be reliable and stable.

Thanks again to Ofer Bengal, CEO and co-founder of Garantia Data for taking time out to speak with VMblog and answer a few questions.
