G-Mobi Leverages Red Bend's Platform-as-a-Service to Provide Software Updates for Android Device Manufacturers in Emerging Markets

Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM) with more than 1.75 billion Red Bend-Enabled devices, announced today that General Mobile Corporation (G-Mobi), a leading provider of mobile phone platform services, is leveraging Red Bend’s Software Management Solution to provide an end-to-end, firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updating service for Android mobile device manufacturers in India, Russia, Southeast Asia and other emerging markets. Currently, the Red Bend-Enabled G-Mobi software management service is being used by more than 20 manufacturers across more than 200 different device models including smartphones and tablets. Two such manufacturers using the service are Cherry Mobile and Fly, which are the lead local OEMs in their respective markets in the Philippines and Russia.

Today, Android has 80 percent of the smartphone market and 54 percent of the tablet market. With Red Bend’s platform as a service (PaaS), G-Mobi offers OEMs the ability to provide ongoing software updates to keep consumers satisfied with new OS versions, features and improvements, powered by the industry’s most trusted and widely deployed FOTA technology from Red Bend that is adopted by big mobile brands. As Android deployments continue to grow, especially in emerging markets, OEMs can partner with G-Mobi to meet consumers’ expectations for continuous OS updates. Through partnering with G-Mobi, OEMs are able to enjoy the same world-class FOTA technology used by world premium brands through G-Mobi’s turn-key service model, the model emerging market OEMS are most accustomed.

“In emerging markets, local OEMs are gaining traction and taking away market share from the major mobile device manufacturers. These local OEMs are successful because they know how to create a price-competitive, localized user experience and can offer the same features and services as the big brands, thanks to companies like G-Mobi and Red Bend Software,” said Will Stofega, Program Director of Mobile Device Technology and Trends at IDC.

The Red Bend Software Management Solution includes the Red Bend Software Management Center in the cloud and Red Bend’s vRapid Mobile® and vDirect Mobile® client software integrated into mobile devices. Red Bend’s vRapid Mobile is the industry’s leading FOTA software deployed in more than 1,300 mobile phones, tablets and other connected device models. Red Bend’s vDirect Mobile is the leading independent device management client that uses OMA DM industry standards.

“We chose Red Bend’s Software Management Solution as the foundation for our software updating service because it is the most reliable and proven mobile software management platform in the industry. Consumers in emerging markets have high expectations from local brands to offer innovative mobile devices, which is why our OEM customers choose G-Mobi to provide feature-rich software platforms, localized app stores and now, thanks to Red Bend, premium FOTA updating,” said Paul Wu, CEO, G-Mobi.

Cherry Mobile is known for being bringing innovative mobile phone devices to the Philippines. The company’s leadership position was further strengthened when it became one of G-Mobil’s first customers. “Thanks to the Red Bend-enabled G-Mobi FOTA service, Cherry Mobile is able to keep smartphones continuously updated, guaranteeing a great user experience. Providing over-the-air updates is strategic to Cherry Play, a suite of value-added services with exclusive applications that are preloaded on all Cherry devices. We have a strong, youthful and engaged growing customer base with high expectations that we are able to exceed by keeping phones updated with the latest software,” said Lonson Alejandrino, Product Manager, Cherry Mobile.

“Our partnership with G-Mobi allows Red Bend to quickly extend our reach into new regions and markets to fulfill the fast-growing demand for mobile software management services on Android devices. The mobile market has long been dominated by a few key players and that landscape is changing with strong local brands such as Fly in Russia, Cherry Mobile in the Philippines and Micromax in India. We are pleased that our Software Management platform is so robust that G-Mobi and its customers are realizing great success in a very short amount of time,” said Shykeh Gordon, EVP, Global Sales, Red Bend Software.
