Virtualization Technology News and Information
FREE Book Available for Download - How To: BYOD Project

A key part of evangelizing a technology such as virtualization is becoming part of a community and sharing good things... useful things with good people, to help them learn and grow within the industry.

To that end, a good friend of mine and a fellow virtualization evangelist, Doug Brown, is doing just that by launching yet another free book to help guide community members.  This time, Doug has embarked on a BYOD journey, creating a 350 page step-by-step book titled, "How to: BYOD Project" where Volume 1 focuses on Citrix XenDesktopPlayer for Mac and Citrix Synchronizer 5.1.1, including Microsoft Hyper-V.

Doug's goal with this book was to create a step-by-step instructional guide for people to learn how to successfully implement a BYO solution that allows end-users to work from anywhere, anyplace, at anytime... no matter if the company owns the device or the user owns it.

Once you start reading it, you'll also notice that Doug wrote this guide without any assumptions as to the previous knowledge of the reader.  He documents everything along the way, and provides a soup-to-nuts approach to make things as easy as possible.  And if you don't already have a working knowledge of Hyper-V, Citrix Synchronizer and/or DesktopPlayer for Mac, don't be alarmed.  Most readers should be able to follow the steps outlined in this book in order to get their BYO proof of concept optimized and successfully deployed.

The book is evolving and growing, but the current Volume already teaches the following:

  • How to install and configure Citrix DesktopPlayer for Mac 1.1
  • How to install and configure Citrix XenClient Enterprise Synchronizer 5.1.1
  • How to install and configure Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2
  • How to install and configure Hyper-V for use with the Citrix Synchronizer
  • How to prepare the environment for installation
  • How to train end-users to use the new DesktopPlayer for Mac solutions
  • Detailed Citrix Synchronizer Policies section
  • Detailed Citrix Synchronizer administration tasks explained
  • Citrix Synchronizer backup and recovery explained
  • How to create & maintain Synchronizer virtual machines
  • and much, much more
