Back in February, VMware launched a free tool called VMware vSphere Mobile Watchlist. In a nutshell, that free tool enabled you to
remotely monitor virtual machines in your vSphere 5.x infrastructure
while on the go, with nothing more than a smartphone at your disposal.
When initially creating this tool, VMware determined that it needed to enable the following functions:
- Select a subset and monitor important virtual machines
- Understand what is going on with these VMs
- Initiate remediation directly or delegate to a team member back in the data center
And
the initial release of the tool did a great job of addressing those needs.
vSphere Mobile Watchlist allowed
the user to easily create a flexible set of watchlists to help with
tracking and monitoring the VMs. It provided an at-a-glance view of those VMs, so
users could quickly review the status (state, health, console and
related objects) of each tagged VM from the mobile device. Another key
feature included in 1.0 was remote remediation, where a user could start, stop
and suspend a VM directly from the mobile device! And for issues that
couldn't be corrected from the smartphone, VMware wired up remediation
delegation, where a user could delegate remediation to on-site
colleagues by sending VM alerts along
with relevant linked VMware Knowledge Base articles (or other articles
from the Web) via email directly from within the application.
To continue to build upon this useful free tool, VMware is back with an update to vSphere Mobile Watchlist, releasing version 1.3.
What's new with this latest version?
- Added support for hosts for monitoring and troubleshooting
- Enhanced display of related objects (e.g. all VMs on host, datastores, networks) and their alerts
- Discover and add hosts and VMs to a watchlist directly from related objects
- Remediation actions on hosts: power operations, connectivity, and maintenance mode
- Updated UI and navigation enhancements
- Bug fixes
