Twilio,
the software and cloud-based communications platform, today announced
that Richard Dalzell has joined its Board
of Directors. Dalzell is the former Chief Information Officer and
Senior Vice President for Amazon.com, the world's largest online
retailer and cloud computing pioneer. In his role at Amazon, Dalzell was
responsible for the worldwide architecture and software
that powers Amazon's technology platform. During his decade long
tenure with Amazon, the company's IT infrastructure scaled to support
more than 69 million customer accounts, over 40 product lines and over a
million third-party sellers. Dalzell also played
a key role in the launch of Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing
platform that is now leveraged by hundreds of thousands of developers
and businesses around the world.
"Rick and Amazon
helped invent cloud computing. AWS virtualized the traditional data
center and made it available at scale to companies around the world.
That same shift is happening in communications.
As Twilio continues to grow, Rick's advice and insight will be
invaluable in helping us address the needs of our developers and
enterprise customers," said Jeff Lawson, CEO and Co-Founder of Twilio.
Prior to joining
Amazon.com, Inc., Dalzell served several roles at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc
from 1990 to 1997, including Vice President of the Information Systems
Division where he led the development of Wal-Mart's
data warehouse strategy.
Dalzell holds a B.S. in Engineering from the United States Military Academy, West Point.
"Twilio is doing
for communications what Amazon Web Services has done for technology
infrastructure - it's leveling the playing field and making it possible
for any business to have access to the communications
infrastructure that let's them connect with their customers via
virtually any channel the customer chooses. Twilio is a game-changer in
the communications space, and I'm looking forward to seeing what both
Twilio and its customers will build next," said Dalzell.
Dalzell joins
Albert Wenger of Union Square Ventures, Byron Deeter of Bessemer Venture
Partners, Scott Raney of Redpoint Ventures, Jim McGeever COO of
Netsuite, and Twilio CEO and co-founder Jeff Lawson
and co-founder Evan Cooke on the board.
