Tesora Releases Tesora DBaaS Platform; First Trove-Based OpenStack Distribution to Support MongoDB

Tesora, developers of a Trove-based OpenStack enterprise-class, scalable database as a service (DBaaS) platform, today announced availability of the Tesora DBaaS Platform. With the Tesora DBaaS Platform, users get all the benefits of OpenStack Trove plus key new features such as automated configuration files at installation, tools for adding guest images of database instances plus support for MongoDB, Cassandra and Redis, as well as MySQL and more.

"Tesora is committed to expanding the base of users and developers who are now turning to the Trove project to support their OpenStack clouds," said Amrith Kumar, founder and CTO of Tesora. "Our new Tesora DBaaS Platform is based on open source Trove and is the first demonstration of the features we want to give back to Trove to extend its power and flexibility to make it more appealing to an even broader community and ensure smooth and successful deployments of Trove in OpenStack."

Trove is Database as a Service for OpenStack. It's designed to run entirely on OpenStack with the goal of allowing users to quickly and easily utilize the features of relational and non-relational database engines without the burden of handling complex administrative tasks. Cloud users and database administrators can provision and manage multiple database instances as needed. 

The Tesora DBaaS Platform includes some additional functionality and code patches that are not in the Icehouse OpenStack distribution of Trove. Tesora's code contributions to Trove have been submitted for consideration upstream into the main OpenStack release. For example, the standard Trove installation requires manual editing of configuration files after the software is installed. The Tesora DBaaS Platform automates this. The packaging is easier to use and a public repository has been established to allow for easy installation.

Secondly, an important consideration in deploying Trove is the guest image for the database instance. While the OpenStack project provides tools for building guest instance images, it can be very challenging to new users. Tesora offers ready-to-use database guest instance images that have been tested for proper operation. These images are available for free download at the Tesora Web site. Free guest images are available for MySQL, Cassandra, Redis and MongoDB.
