Q&A: Interview with Dave @McCrory of @Basho, Talking #RICON 2014
Basho Technologies, the creator and developer of Riak, a leading distributed NoSQL database, recently finalized its keynote speakers and a preliminary speaker list for RICON 2014, the distributed systems conference hosted by Basho.  To find out more about this fast approaching event, I spoke with Basho's CTO, Dave McCrory.

VMblog:  To help educate us on this event, can you provide us with a little background information on RICON?

Dave McCrory:  RICON is a distributed systems conference hosted by Basho. In previous years, we divided the event and held RICON East and RICON West. However, with the distributed systems industry expanding so quickly and gaining so much momentum, we are focused on a unified conference this year in Las Vegas, October 28-29. Our goal is to bring together a diverse group of distributed systems experts, developers, engineers, executives, researchers and community members to dive deeper into the distributed systems landscape and explore what's been going on the past year and what's coming up.

VMblog:  That sounds great.  So can you give us an idea of what people should expect during RICON 2014?

McCrory:  We're kicking off RICON 2014 with Build a Cloud Day presented by Citrix Systems, Inc., on October 27, which will teach attendees how to build and manage a cloud environment with open source software from a distributed systems perspective. Then we'll have two days of sessions and keynotes on everything from distributed systems best practices and real-world experiences to industry trends, and what to expect in the coming years. RICON is an important event for the distributed systems industry as it brings together such a variety of professionals and researchers. We are lucky to have some great sponsors for the event including IBM, HP, Cloudsoft, Citrix and AdRoll. It won't be all work though; we have a few after parties planned at iconic locations, so it should be a fun event.

VMblog:  And what's planned on the agenda?

McCrory:  We have about 25 sessions over two days with a dev and ops track. We're still putting the finishing touches on the agenda, but our keynote speakers include Mark Interrante, SVP of engineering, HP Helion; Marten Mickos, SVP and general manager of cloud, HP (previously CEO of Eucalyptus); and Mac Devine, director of cloud innovation and CTO, IBM Cloud Services Division. We're working on a few panels to bring together industry experts who can debate the hottest trends in distributed systems ecosystem.

Attendees can expect a variety of experts, industries and some end user talks from companies such as AdRoll, Braintree, Comcast,, Fastly, Google, Pivotal, Riot Games, Yahoo! and more. And no RICON would be complete without some insights from academic circles. We have Peter Alvaro, a PhD candidate at UC Berkeley as our final keynote. His presentation, "Outwards from the Middle of the Maze," will be a great way to close out the show.

VMblog:  Wow, sounds like a great lineup!  What are you looking forward to most about the event?

McCrory:  I'm really looking forward to meeting new people as well as the community returning from previous years to connect about the latest in distributed systems. Conferences always bring together such a diverse group of people with so many different backgrounds, it's great to learn about their experiences and make long term connections.

VMblog:  Ok, now let's tell folks when and where RICON takes place.  And if you would, where can people register to attend?

McCrory:  The conference will be October 27-29 at the Palms in Las Vegas. Tickets are on sale now at and, and we also have a block of rooms at the Palms. The number of tickets and rooms available at the block price are limited, so we recommend registering early to save your spot for this memorable conference!

It's always great to catch up with Dave McCrory, as we go way back.  And who doesn't enjoy a good trade show?  The lineup at RICON 2014 sounds very interesting, and with limited availability to blocked out rooms, those interested in attending should make plans soon.  Enjoy the show!
